GREEDY GM and MYGMC / MYCHEVY APP

Why exactly do you believe this is BS?  The truck needs a connection to Amazon's servers, hence an internet connection is needed.  And GM likely doesn't want to deal with the bazillion tech support calls they would get to support internet connections via your phone...

Well, When you have it replace you current VI and then you try to use Alexa to do basic things and you cant due to no data plan, just frustrating.

Well, then, most likely when you changed the "VI", you just clicked through the readme that would have said you need an internet connection for Alexa...  Basically everything Alexa does needs an internet connection.

It’s understandable that you need data to use the Alexa app, at least IMO. The problem for me though is that it will only work with data that you buy through OnStar. I have my data directly from ATT through my existing account. Alexa won’t work with that data though. Nope, have to buy it directly from OnStar at their higher $$ rates.

Pretty sure I read on here somewhere that you could add your truck as a device to your personal at&t plan and p probably end up with better service.

What a rude awakening in coming back from vacation and trying to remote start the car to cool it down only to find out the rug was pulled out from under me! I have been using it since I bought new in 2014 and grew very accustom to having Alexa start my vehicle in the AM as part of a morning routine. Just kinda crappy how it was suddenly taken away. BOOOOO GMC BOOOOO!!!!

Always was a 5 year thing for the free phone remote.

Purchased after spring 2018 and it's no longer 5 yr free.

(Of course 'free' is relative.  Just means everyone pays in purchase price, and non-users are subsidizing those that want the feature)

That is correct, and is what I’ve done. My truck is connected to ATT through our wireless phone account. However, Alexa won’t work with that BYOD data plan. It’ll only work if you buy the data plan from OnStar.
