A little help making up my mind.

Recommended Posts

Howdy folks. I'm hoping you can all help me make a decision and answer a few questions for me.

I'm looking to purchase a new GM truck, but I'm having some trouble deciding on which way I want to go. On one side, I want the AT4, but I will admittedly never purposely take it off road. I just like the appearance (color matched bumper and grille, door handles) and amenities (6.2L, ventilated seats, HUD, wireless charger, etc). It's basically the easiest way to get everything on my list of requirements. If I go with the AT4, I can go with the 20" wheels to get the less aggressive tire and not ruin the ride.

I do prefer the look of the Chevy though. Specifically, the RST with the color matched components. I see they're going to be putting the 6.2 in the RST for the 2020 model year, so I'm considering waiting. The problem with that is that I'm not sure if it has everything I'm wanting. Some of my requirements are little and insignificant, but I figure if I'm spending $50k+, I want it to be perfect.

So I ask for you folks to help me decide. Should I wait for the 2020 model to get the 6.2L RST? Can I even get ventilated seats on the RST? Wireless charging pad? Rear camera mirror? I want the HD Surround cameras and all the bells and whistles. The thing keeping me from jumping on the LTZ to get what I want is that I'm not a big fan of all the chrome. I could go High Country and just get the grille insert color matched later, but then I still have some other chrome stuff on there I don't want.

Or should I just go with the 2019 AT4 where I know I can get all the options I want, even though I don't like the front end as much as the Chevy? The number two requirement, behind the 6.2L, is good ride quality. I want little road noise and the smoothest ride possible.

Thanks guys!

Part of your problem is that GM offers too many packages now !  LOL

If price is not a limiting factor, it sounds like a high country will be your best bet and you could always de-badge the chrome or have the chrome wrapped or painted.

Some of the good deals and discounts have started on the '19 models now. You could probably get a great deal on a High Country.

Otherwise, the RST does not offer some of the higher end features/options you want.

You will have to wait until later this year/summer for the 6.2 option and have the ability to start building a 2020 online.

Maybe some of the higher end features/options will be available on an RST.

Bottom line is being able to drive what you purchase with a smile on your face.

Do not settle or skimp as you said with spending over 50k.

Not sure if I'd want wireless charging, technology keeps changing and it won't work with Android Auto, it has to be plugged in.

High Country isn't discounted as much as the lower trims.

Get the center console, that's always a must on my list!

Go with the Chev

People are giving the GMC a new nick name. PIGFACE , next time and every time you look a GMC grill it will remind you of that

I would definitely wait for a 2020. Lots of new features and much needed updates coming. The 19s do not have adaptive cruise for example, which is asinine. The 6.2 will be available in more trims for 2020 as well. Plus, it's never really good to get the first model year of any vehicle.

I have always thought that the grill on the new Rams and GMC's looked a lot alike:)

Best of both worlds.  A '20 AT4.  But you said you wanted a truck with a good ride.  Then you need to go down the street to the RAM dealer.  Car and Driver magazine has tested several of the 2019 GM 1/2 ton trucks with 20 and 22 inch wheels and said they hammer and bounce over road imperfections that Fords and RAMS don't notice.

That would have gotten me buying the 2019, not the 2020. I rented a car that had it and it was horrible, I would not want that, especially the ones that I cannot turn off!

I had the same conundrum, I love the look of the RST but wanted the 6.2 and cooled seats. I bought a High Country, it checks all of the boxes and I love the look, except for a little too much chrome. Remove the steps, debadge and a little vinyl wrapping would fix that but I don’t care that much and I’m just going to leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is.

the 6.2/10spd is awesome.

Yeah I'm starting to see that. And I have seen some amazing deals on the LTZ and HC.

That's a good point. It's something I saw and thought would be great to just be able to lay my phone down and use GPS or music over bluetooth without having to plug it in. Then again, the truck will have GPS. So it's not something I should probably list as a requirement.

If you can wait and order the RST you want, it'll be a decent savings over an HC and having to change up any chrome pieces.

Given your situation, I'd wait and order an RST.

That's been part of my thinking. The RST is going for a full $12k-$15k less than an LTZ, HC, or AT4. So even without incentives, I'd probably still be cheaper and I wouldn't have to worry about spending more to eliminate the chrome and whatnot.

You know, I keep hearing that the new RAM interior is so much better. I guess I'm just not seeing it, and it's not like I'm coming from a 95 interior or anything. I've got a '14 now. I don't want a giant screen. I do like the small attention to detail, like contrasting stitching and other things. Maybe I just need to sit in one to understand. I don't think I could ever be fully happy with it. I'm a 3rd generation GM driver.

I need to experience this. I've heard some people say they would never own another vehicle without it and equally as many say they'd never own a vehicle with it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe you can answer a few more questions for me:

I looked around at RSTs last night, just to kind of feel out what I could expect IF I waited. I noticed the camera only had two (or three) options at the bottom. Is that just a different screen and you still have the other surround cameras? Or is that just all that it comes with? I got confused because I noticed alot of the HC and LTZs with the same screen, which I thought was odd.

If I was to jump in and get the LTZ or HC, what do you guys prefer, as far as eliminating the chrome: Plasti-dip, vinyl wrapping, complete component replacement, or something else?

Thanks again!

Yeah, the HC is edging out the LTZ for me because that gigantic bumper is one less thing I'd have to wrap/paint or whatever. Grille, window edgings, door handles, and mirrors would be fairly easy.

Something else I forgot to mention is how much I hate a sunroof. And it's incredibly difficult to find an LTZ/HC/AT4 without a sunroof.
