RST vs Trail boss why you chose yours? Would you switch?

Recommended Posts

When the T1 fist appeared I obviously was attracted to the TB. But after awhile and building all the models online the 2in lift didn’t really seem worth it. Then they announced the 6.2 and i6 comes in the RST and I can put my own lift/wheels on later. Also 18’s are to small for this truck imo I can live with the stock 20’s for a little. I feel like the RST is a better buy if you plan on modding your truck. If you like the 2in lift the TB is fine.

With the new updates to the 20’s with engine trims and other things. Are you gonna trade in your 19? I’m sure the dealers won’t mind a truck with 1-10k miles and you probably wouldn’t lose to much $. I’m patiently waiting like everybody for the i6 to show what it’s got. I’m very glad the 6.2 will also be offered as a 2nd choice but I’m 85% committed to the baby Dmax?

I have an RST with 20’s, fully loaded.

If you’re going to drop some $ to mod your truck, I would personally get the RST and do it yourself. You’ll have better components in the end for probably close to the same $.

I like my TB better than an RST for the look (dont mean the lift) as for 18's and 20's ,  18 is the way to go if you tow and go offroad, 20's are only for looks IMO as they ride usually harder than 18 (more sidewall) I prefer 18 over 20 , heck anything is better than 20 for me , as for RST or TB ... i wouldnt switch i love my TB, my dad is waiting on his RST with an I4 so we'll see ...

but if you're going to lift it and such , go RST and built her up  at the end of the days its still will be a beautiful Chevy truck :P

I agree with both of you. (Can’t quote for some reason)

Thats what i thought too I liked the look of the trail boss for the front end being black and the way the TB rims 18’s look over any of the other stock rims . With 20’s and a lift I’ll get 35” tires and get back the 2in of rubber I would be missing.

18’s on this truck are just to small For me because 1 the truck is huge and 90% of people won’t set it up for “only” off road with giant rubber. Also I guess you can’t really fit 35’s tires on the trail boss with out spacers depending on rims etc.  So to me sounds like you kinda are gonna have to mod the truck anyways to fit “big” tires on it.

20 inch wheels on a truck are strictly for looks, what's it going to do, bend corners like a car???

What weighs more,  air and rubber,  or the metal wheel? Unsung weight is the main reason for suspension comfort, keeping that wheel and tire combo under control is way easier when it weighs less....

I disagree if you go taller and not wider sure it’s for looks. If you change how wide the rim is and tire size it changes everything. My little car has 18’s drives fine and hauls ass and new bmw’s or any high price 100,000+ car has 20 or 22 wheel because they ride better with bigger tiers. The height isn’t the only factor in how the vehicles ride is and you have to change other components to fix it. 18’s simply look too small and they is way to much fender gap unless you throw 35’s or 37’s on. Oh wait you have to lift the truck for that so you gotta mod it anyway.

Aside from the factory lift the only real difference is look.

From a painted front end standpoint.

One could always add the factory 2" lift to an RST package or utilize an aftermarket lift later on down the road.

I was torn when I bought my trail boss. I still like the tb looks better. But every time I go to climb in and out of the bed, or load coolers, or my dogs in the bed, the 2 inch lift really sucks. Just makes everything harder. But it looks cool so that is the compromise.

18 inch rims all the way. If I had the 20s I probably would have wrecked one in the parking garage the other day5fd53015dc989141074c3b2a40d6584e.jpg

The first part of your suspension is your tires, the more rubber between the rim and road, the more bump absorbed in the rubber itself before starting to deflect the suspension. My truck weighs 8,250 with me in it, I can understand your login with the sporty car thing, but on my weighed down truck, I’ll take the tall sidewall.

Yeah rubber is important but that’s the thing there are soooo many kinds of tires some might be okay and others might ride like a brick. But somebody with a different tire set on of the same size might need to do the real stuff the pets that . Saying thicker rubber makes a better ride just isn’t true. The moving parts do the real work. Throwing fatter tires to increase ride is just preference

I hear what you guys are saying about 20 inch rims.  Nothing worse than seeing a big lifted truck with little tiny sidewalls on the tires, the definition of dork IMO.

But these newer trucks have a lot more room for rubber around those 20's than past trucks.  275/60r20 is what came stock on my truck, and you could easily go bigger (and I will).  TB comes with 275/65r18... that's only a half inch more sidewall -- the TB tire + wheel is actually an inch shorter than what came stock on my LT with 20's if my math is right.

I think with these big wheel wells the proportions for good looking tires + wheels call out for 20's, and you are still going to have plenty of rubber there for ride quality and off-road.

Now just for laughs... :puke:

Here is what I don’t get what is the new trend I’m seeing more and more. A lifted truck with these rims that hang out into another zip code lol? I mean cmon you lift a truck and put rims like that on rubber band tires. And on top of hanging out there not even in line front sticks out more then the back does. Most I see are not even level either most are ass end down front end up. I get a lift or even filling the wheel wells but what is the point of this look I see idk.

I have a 4X2 5.3 RST but I think after 3 years when I trade it in for another truck I will consider the Trail Boss. My dealership friend Says the TBs are a rougher ride than the RSTs but that doesn’t make sense considering the TB should have better suspension in theory. I will test drive both for sure. I want the 2” lift and maybe even the 6.2 10S if available. I don’t have a need to ever go off road but I can’t justify a lifted 4X2’s impractical nature. Maybe my camping trips will change and I could get more adventurous in the future. I’m curious what others plan on doing in a few years as far as trading in for another Chevy?

Funny after I typed this I came across a parked stock T1 TB with 18” and all terrain tires   The wheels did not fill the wheel wells and looked a little small for the truck. My RST next to it with 20” did not look much smaller at all. Am I missing something? I thought the difference would be more dramatic.

I’m saying 20’s are in 18’s are out to small. The trail boss rides rougher cause of the 2in. You can get the 2in lift for the RST and it will ride the Same
