So my tailgate is damaged on my 2019 Denali 1500

Recommended Posts

Without getting into any detail the tailgate was left down while reversing by my girlfriend and hit a pole. So as you can see in the photos not sure what the name of the part would be but its the table top that was hit and pushed in. The molding trim on top needs replacing and then that inner tail gate piece would be needing replacing as well. Its plastic so im hoping the shell piece is not too expensive. Is this an automatic dealer part or can it be sourced else where? I would only require the shell part and hopefully it comes painted already. What is the part number of tail gate piece? Also how much can this piece cost me? Thanks

Just take it to a body shop and order the parts thru them and either install the parts yourself or just bite bite the bullet and pay the body shop to swap it out as if you have the tailgate camera and ADAS on the vehicle the camera may need to be recalibrated.

ADAS is Advanced Driver Assistant Device. IF you have that you'll have to have it recalibrated by the body shop, dealer or someone who has a scan tool providing it can by calibrated dynamically vs a static calibration.

New vehicles with ADAS have opened a whole new world of revenue for shops and dealers who invest in the tech. Windshield replacement, then front camera in window needs recalibrated.

Any shop can order that with a GM account. Easy fix.

Correct, should've been more clear.  Meant GM item only (not dealer).  Doesn't have to be gotten from a dealer but from GM.

Not sure how insurance and deductibles are in Canada, but I'd be willing to bet you are looking at over $500,00 for the repair. I would file a claim and let the insurance company do what i pay them for if it were my truck.

Thought for sure this was going to be the first hitch ball mount damage thread. Lol.

I don't see any reason for replacing the tailgate or its skin. I believe it's aluminum and they can fix it. It's for a while that Ford owners are dealing with it. I think you shouldn't replace the skin or the tailgate unless major damages happened at other parts and areas.

As new as the pickup is just buy the part(s), get it painted, install it and be done.

What's the story about hitch ball damage? IS there a history with that or just a inside joke-

?

Does this pickup have the rear camera on the tailgate?

Depending on your deductible, the cost, and how much you want to keep this off Carfax,

consider paying out of pocket. Just having “damage rear” show on Carfax will reduce your value by quite a bit.....as me how I know.

And yes, a well repaired tailgate, like mine and yours should not deduct much if any value off the truck, in particular a few years old. But when you go trade it in or sell it down the road, the dealer and any private buyer is going got hit you for thousands, no fair, but that is what happens.

I'd take the truck to a body shop and have them coordinate fixing the whole mess... Depending on the estimate I'd just pay outta pocket to avoid making a claim..

Have you looked into paintless dent repair.  Once the plastic trim comes off the top edge of the tailgate there may be a number of holes that will allow them to work their magic.  I had that done with my 2017 Denali and for $200 you could not tell anything happened.  Luckily the plastic on mine was not damaged.  A new panel will also need new letters which are about $50 to $75.  Good luck.
