2018 Allison slow to downshift

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I have my first nice truck. 2018 2500 Silverado with 5k miles. I've towed a 4k pound trailer about 1,000 miles, other than that it has only seen daily driving.

On my morning commute I'm at 35 to 40 mph alot. If I creep up to 35 it revs to about 1600 RPM and stays there. It seems like it should downshift and if I get up to 45 it'll downshift and then I can creep down to 35 mph and it'll stay at that shift point.

Any other observations?

If easy on the pedal, and not towing, mine shifts at about 34, 43 and 53.

If engine is still cold it will hold them longer.

Once shifted, you can slow back down and they will stay in the higher gear.

2017+  (L5P trucks) up lock up torque converter in lower gear than earlier versions.

Might be why this more noticeable in the lower gears.

I often ran my LML up to 53/54 to get it to take 6th, and then slowed back down to the 50 range. Didn't notice the issue with the 3/4 and 4/5 shift on that truck.
