What’s Up With The Brake Wear Indicator? 3,600 Miles and 26% Gone??

Recommended Posts

What’s up with this malarkey now? I don’t tow and I drive well. Does this really mean we are going to have to replace the pads every 13,000  miles? God I hope not. How do I delete this didn’t see the other thread.

I would assume its a calculated value, based on your stopping data; speed, brake line pressure, pedal position, time, decel, etc.

I wouldn't put too much faith into it - just like the MPG calculator, it will vary vs the actual numbers.

I’m at almost 6000 miles and 89 front 92 back.. towed about 1000 and stop and go the rest

this sounds fairly accurate. ~60k miles on brakes is the average. I'd accept, and expect to land around that mark.

There is another thread already on this but ill post what i have posted on the other one.

Ok, just checked mine today;

Odometer: 3698 miles

Front brakes: 92%

Rear brakes: 96%

i might as well add air filter: 90%

Doing the math I should get roughly 46,000 miles for the front brakes, the rear 92,500 miles.

Both seem pretty low for normal wear and tear.

Hope this helps everyone.  Just checked mine now when I rotated my tires.  18k miles and my fronts say 41% left for the brake pads.  Not true at all.  They are almost brand new, front and back.  I wouldn't worry at all about what the sensors say.

I smell a rat.

If GM can get you to take your vehicle in for brakes sooner than needed , $$$$ in their till for parts and dealers, techs also.

As mentioned in the other thread, just check them has worked for over a hundred years.

I dropped my TB off today for its first oil change and told them to fix this issue.  2,551 miles and I'm at 50% front and 64% rear.  At this rate my brakes will be all used up by 5,000 miles.  Stay tuned...

The fix is, turn off the monitor, problem solved.

Only if you choose to replace the brake pads then.  From reading people's reports, the pads themselves are fine/barely used.  It's a sensor/calibration problem, not the pads wearing out.

Brake Pad Wear sensors? Obviously, this is for those who are not mechanically inclined.

Considering vehicles go through a mandatory safety inspection every 1-2 years.

4-5 if new. For the most part, factory pads and rotors now last for tens of thousands of miles.

What next? Dirty Paint /Wash Soon indicators?      :loser:
