2019 5.3/8speed vs 6.2/10speed worth it?

Recommended Posts

Was getting very close to ordering RST Crew z71 Standard bed. A little concerned with all the negative reviews on the 8 speed although some owners seem pleased.

Choices (1) proceed as planned

(2) jump up to 2019 LTZ with 6.2/10speed

(3) wait for 2020 5.3/10speed

The problem with door #3 is no incentives for quite a while?

The other factor is I really prefer cloth in Texas and I plan to drive it 10 years.

Can never go wrong with the 6.2...I certainly don’t regret digging deeper into my checking account.

That said, I found the 5.3 8 speed to be a nice driving combo. Only wild card is that if you’re ordering, you won’t be able to do an extended drive with the exact truck you’re buying until after it’s built and delivered.

Option 3 is tough. Rather than wait for the 20, I’d probably just hold off until September and buy a 19 6.2 off the lot for less money than the 20 5.3 10 speed may cost you.

I loved my 2011 6.2 with six speed, and my 2019 6.2 with 10-speed is WAY better (power, responsiveness, smoothness, gas mileage). In between those two I had a 5.3 with 8 speed that I hated. My 6.2 gets better mileage, is smoother and is tons more fun to drive than the 5.3.

Door Number Two!

My 8 speed in my RST is butter smooth. I never understood the obsession everyone has with more gears.  My 2016 was a 6.2/ 8 speed...  it was also butter.

Cant argue the 6.2 is nice ... but I will say I don't miss it. The 5.3 trucks this year are faster than ever... and to be honest I can't tell a huge difference from this truck and my 2016 6.2 (which was tuned btw)

In my towing days I generally use 5 speed manuals paired with diesels. I always wished for one more gear and used gears venders on some trucks. We quit towing our own stuff in the early 2000s. The game of more gears is interesting especially in gas vehicles. Once you can keep your vehicle in its torque range under max throttle input more gears are a waste. You start losing time shifting. It seems some of the reviews in the magazines (car and driver) point that out. Adding more expense for the latest fad?

If they offered the 6.2L in the RST, I would have bought it.

The 6.2L availability in the AT4 almost made me reach up for that, but I felt the extra 2" lift was a little too big for me. Also, I think the Silverado front ends look better... though the AT4 is the best looking GMC, for sure. (until the Elevation is released in CC in 2020)
