Brake Replacement/Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Morning y'all,

So I've been reading the forums regarding replacing/upgrading the brake and the time has come for me to replace the brakes on my 2016 Sierra and I wanted to see which route people went with.

I've heard about people upgrading to the "police" brakes offered on the PPV. Comments?

Thanks!!

The police rotors are nice. Also, use the pads for a Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban of the same year. They fit the same, but have more pad material.

You can find everything you need on Amazon.

Interesting...Why is that?

I have no idea. The backing plates are the same. The truck pads have a bevel cut into them at either end into the pad material, so the contact patch is reduced with the rotor.

It makes no sense. But they are different part numbers. Calipers are the same, rotors are the same, so there ought not to be a difference in the pads.

There is no difference on the brakes, the part numbers are the same. Chevy Tahoe front pads....(Sierra/Silverado trucks)   84320501 , w or w/o or 4wd all the same. So much bad info... listed on here.

if you want a upgrade and only if your wheels can fit it, either get the GM big brake upgrade or try 2019 trucks FPC.

There is a difference between the truck pads and SUV pads as far as P/N. I know it because I've done it.

the parts may be standard now, the only difference I see is the different model years rotors/pads, w/ or w/o police package show the same part number, only thing I see is rotor being different for improved cooling or thermal. In DD you will not notice any difference. I want to note here stock wheels and tires, once you go aftermarket heavy wheels, bigger tires the change in braking is more dramatic.

OP, you might have a vacuum pump issues.

I have done many GM big brake retrofits, through my years of working on vehicles both professional  (local police MB vehicles) and personal GM, & some for my close friends on many different cars/trucks, always came down to 2 things, go to a bigger rotor (swept area & leverage advantage ) & FPC's, even with crappy pads it was miles better than pads and rotors. I have 15" rotors on my 19" wheels on my CTSV, my Denali truck has wimpy 13" rotors under factory 20's with a massive weight difference between the vehicles... really GM?

You may have the dealer check the vacuum pump. I’m in a 2015 and brakes are still good, just about to hit 72k mikes. I just received a letter within the last couple weeks from GM stating they are extending coverage for 6 years or 72xxx miles in regards to longer than normal stopping distance at slow speeds caused by vacuum pump issues. Free fix if you’re still in that 6/72, or they’ll reimburse if you’ve paid to have that fixed already.

Is there a reference number or update number on your letter regarding the vacuum pump?

It stated that my VIN qualified, May just be for 2015 models or specific ones Im not sure, but here’s the letter.

No problem. I’ve kept up with routine maintenance but I do notice it can take a little more foot effort slowing up at stoplight sometimes. it could just be in my head now that I read the letter lol. I saw a message flash once in the DIC very briefly but I can’t recall what it said to service. I want to say it was parking sensors related though as I painted mine a little too thick and blocked them on my first try. Pads were good at last state inspection 4 months ago , mechanic actually commented on the brakes being in great shape for oem and 5 years old or so. Good luck
