Mechanical Vacuum Pump-Special Coverage Program

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure GM has a full time team of lawyers working for them. If they believe this issue will not leave them liable for death or injury in a lawsuit, they must not think its that serious.

If it was possible for this issue to cause a problem that would lead to litigation, don't you think your letter would have said "RECALL" on the top? Isn't the thread of being held liable in court the only thing that matters? They don't issue recalls or repair warranty parts out of the goodness of their hearts.

Death maybe, injuries would be a $$ calculation by those lawyers for warranty vs injury payout costs in my opinion.

I have a Canada truck purchased in the USA and no letter as of yet

Got something similar to this on my wifes MDX the other day.  Something about the piston rings can become distorted over time and cause it to burn excessive oil and the powertrain warranty was being extended to 120k miles and 10yrs

Yeah they have a team of lawyers and actuaries that analyze it for them and make recommendations. The link I posted about the person suing GM over their accident was in reply to your statement "Apparently this issue has not caused anyone to rear-end another vehicle". Could this brake issue never result in death? Sure. Are my wife and I willing to be the first death that forces this to be a full blown recall? Nope. If your point is that people make a bigger deal out of simple fixes more than they should, I won't argue there...it happens too often. But any issues related to my brakes are something I just won't mess with. If it was a design issue the automaker should make it right. GM is attempting to do that with this extended warranty, although I'd argue they should replace them all...but I'm not an actuary :-)

S.O.L. if you are beyond 6 years or 72K miles unless you can get a dealer to Goodwill it.

When was the part redesigned and did the new design fix the issue.  Mine is a very late build '18 so I would assume it already came with the newest unit.  I haven't had any issues yet.

Something else that needs to be kept in mind other than accidents or death is the death of the engine due to pump failure.

In many cases the pump grenades when it fails, allowing metal shavings and pieces to enter the engine as the pump is bolted

to the block and lubricated by engine oil.

Stopping is one thing but a blown engine due to pump failure is bad also if you ask me.

A new pump part number or Redesign came about  in '16 I believe.

I would have to imagine any stealership worth a sh!t would replace it if you told them it had happened multiple times in the past even if they couldn’t duplicate it. I probably wouldn’t go in tomorrow with the letter in hand stating I want this done now. I’m sure every time they send these letters out for this kind of crap every stealership gets multiple calls/visits a day from owners of said vehicles wanting instant gratification. I’ll wait till this fall sometime when I go get a oil change and casually mention it.

This is my 4th type letter from GM on my 015 so I’m averaging 1 a year. GO TEAM... at least it’s all silly stuff like seat belt, loss of steering, and brakes... ?

I’d also like to know why corporate GM finds it necessary to mail these letters with my vin plastered on the front of the envelope??? Really in this day and age of rampant identity theft and the ability to have a key cut from just the vin, WHY...

I find it funny a lot of guys want to knock Furd or Dodge for this kind of stuff but act like GM is immune to it...

Here is the bulletin for you guy wanting to know what years are covered. So I would assume 018s either have the “updated” part or there hasn’t been enough reports of failures with the 018s yet?
