GM's Mary Barra Was Paid $21,870,000 in 2018 - Did She Earn It?

NO ONE is worth that kind of money, no one. No athlete, no politician, no scientist, not one is worth that kind of money. Doesn't matter if they have enough to pay it, put that money to good use, find a way to make fusion power work.

NO ONE.

I'm on the same page Grumpy Bear. I think I did a pretty good job making that point with the GM employee earning comparisons in the story, no?

You did John. It just could use a spot light. Cockroaches live in the dark, yes?

People generally get this wrong. It’s not how much a person is worth according to us. It’s to the competitor. Sometimes it’s about the people who comes along with. You don’t usually get there by yourself it’s who you surround yourself with. Your worth as much as some ones willing to pay.

I would love to argue this point but...I can't....you nailed it. Except for failing to make a distinction between 'worth' and 'value'. I'll assume the kinder. Your VALUE is as much as someone is willing to pay.

Your reasoning is sound. So yes it is 'normal'.

If normal is just 'middle of the road popular' then one must conclude that greed is normal. SO what is that larger question?

Is it MORAL? And more importantly; by WHOSE standard will we be gauging MORALITY?  Refining the question:

Is GREED moral?

(That is the question I was leading you to John.)

I will never buy a another new GM truck. I will always drive the one I have. That’s how I show my displeasure.

The Economic Vote in action. It is how commerce is decided is it not? Truck or a candy bar, the ones that remain are the ones bought. You're a rare one KARNUT. The 'middle of the road' guy will normally vote his 'self interest' as the buyer is generally as greedy as the seller. A few more will vote their ignorance. Come to think of it I might have these two reversed.

If the "corporation" has that kind of money floating around, how about paying back the United States government some of that "bail your @$$ out" funds they supposedly loaned GM?  My banker surely isn't that generous to me.

My distinction in these cases is the CEO that built the company versus those who ended up in that position.  Bill Gates built Microsoft.  The money is his and I have no problem with that.  Most CEO’s making millions did not build the company, they basically inherited it.  For them to make that kind of money is beyond ridiculous.  Do they seriously think they bring hundreds if times more value to the company than the average worker?  No, they don’t.  I like the free market, but I would be nice if there was a functioning mechanism to rebalance some of these things.  The next imbalance is the pay of our teachers and first responders.  It’s a shame what they make compared to the responsibility we entrust them with.

well said. The average worker anywhere in america agrees that CEO's are not worth their pay. Why did we hear so much about the 99% vs the 1%? Remember Occupy Wall Street?

That teacher and first responder contribute more value to society on a daily basis than Mary Barra, but unfortunately the economics of their businesses don't reward them accordingly.

I definitely would be more on board if it wasn’t for the 5.7 diesel. I am more than willing to give up a little fuel economy and even HP for longevity. My old truck engine was rebuilt to handle 12lbs of boost. I’m running 5. It’s still insanely fast for the street and very reliable. I believe at this point they’ve jumped the shark on HP and trying to get fuel mileage out a brick. I never thought I say that about HP, my wife drives a Genesis that’s faster than any muscle car I had in the seventies. Slow down GM make them reliable again. Maybe when I trade in my Camry I’ll buy a GM instead of a stinger.

I answer a different question, I do that sometimes. I definitely think their over paid. Most of these bigs companies are about show and perception. Much like cocktail parties we’re doing well look how much we pay our CEO. Every time the hire a new CEO and over pay their stock goes up, especially if they get one from a competitor.

I probably will to, but that is because I can't afford a new one.

She has about $42 Million in GM stock.

On April 30th before the Stock Market opening bell, GM is releasing its 1st Quarter 2019 Financial Data.

Bet she sells lotsa stock on April 29th. She is not stupid. “Insider Trading?”.....nooooo she didn’t know the report was coming out the next day....

If you found a company and grow it to that size, you deserve every dollar you make as long as you are doing good business.

If you are hired by a board by a publicly traded company, you are being overpaid.

Mary Berra is not a good leader, makes poor decisions, and has no real direction. She needs to go.

All CEO's are overpaid in my opinion but, as the article stated, other CEO's are overpaid about the same... I don't concern myself too much with these matters but, as over priced as cars are and as overpaid UAW workers and clearly automotive executives are it makes me wish there was an alternative but, sadly all cars are over priced...

GM’s bread an butter money makers are...extended cab trucks from Mehico.

Makes no money for Americans...minus the CEO.

I edited out the last line as I have no opinion I care to share on her performance. But I do agree with the first line IF the bold highlights are observed. Part of doing good business, IMHO, if fair and equitable treatment of those you employ.

"Love your neighbor as yourself'.

It's not just a great idea, it's a requirement for a God fearing human.
