Since I am over 100,000 miles I started using the Mobil1 5W30 High Mileage formula in my 2.7L.

This one here: https://amzn.to/438fCqt

Technically its not Dexos...but its probably because some of the additives may hinder fuel economy a bit. I'm out of warranty anyways, so I am not gonna sweat it. So far I haven't noticed any adverse fuel economy effects.

Will see if this oil helps with the consumption. I am going to stick with my 30% OLM changes, which is usually right around 5,000 miles.

Unrelated to the engine...the damn tire shop snapped a wheel stud off when I was having a rotation and balance done. They are claiming the lug was cross threaded and it wasn't their fault....so I gotta work on that now.

Probably wouldn't hurt to use a 5W40 Euro oil at all.  Especially with the highway miles you do.

Possibly, I'd be worried the 5W40 would cause excessive oil pressure tho being a thicker oil at temp. But who knows if the difference would be noticeable.

It won’t. Our oil pumps only show higher pressure when using a an abnormally viscous lube in cold weather. Less than 40 F. And on cold start the pump will drop that pressure quick to ensure VOLUME to the engine. Not worried about pressure.

saw a recall video for a 2023 batch of 2.7's mid-size and full size, defect in casting in the block, no online reports, guy goes from doom and gloom to rosy and back to doom and gloom, like most who try to find an issue with it...he wasn't well researched, someone can find and post here? hardest cylinder liners known to man and forged bottom end as the above link mentions etc. built like diesel...so he's like many who have been salivating for some sort of common 2.7 issue or common warranty item....poor buggers, it's been 5 years and they are still salivating for something....this block recall for free new engine had this guy just ecstatic to finally have some click bait on the 2.7 lol...anyway surely it will affect some  the posters here so may as well post in the thread...found it

At least they are replacing the engine. I had a 2018 Nissan Armada and a 2018 Nissan titan both had to have their engines replaced that being said afterword the titan has been flawless and has been a really great truck Armada we sold off. Things happen it’s what the dealer does in response to it that matters. That being said, I haven’t had a lick of  trouble with my 2.7 Silverado.

Love reading that someone hit 100k! How has it been? any sort of problems with the 8spd automatic? I have a 2020 that just ticked over 70k, and a 2023 that just ticked over 6500 miles. Both have been smooth sailing. The 2023 transmission feels much smoothier than the 2020 but the extra torque/hp is also welcomed.

Honestly, the 8 speed in my truck has been fine. I've had it serviced 2x now. Once at 50,000 miles and then again recently at 96,000. I will keep up with +/- 50,000 mile transmission services for as long as I have this truck. I've also done all the differentials and transfer case every 50,000 miles. I replaced shocks at 96,000 with Bilstein 5100's, that was a noticeable improvement in handling and ride compared to the squishy OEM's. They were def tired. Original tires lasted to about 60k miles. I replaced them with Michelin Defenders, those are doing good, will probably last another 30,000-40,000 miles. My brake service monitor says my fronts have 59% life and rears have 78% life. I checked them out at my last tire rotation and they all seem to be wearing quite evenly. I did have to replace a wheel stud recently because the tire shop cross threaded a lug and snapped the stud off while doing a rotation.

Other than the oil consumption, and the wheel stud. No other major issues. Truck has been extremely reliable and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country and back right now.

California would probably be the only thing I would worry about if I did that. 🤣

I think the reports have been that only some 12 or so trucks were effected. That's right 12.

This is curious. Why in the world would there be any kind of notification on a problem that affects only 12 or so vehicles. Why would that raise any kind of attention, other than a replacement under warranty? I had a speedometer problem on my 04 Z-71 couldn’t get one. I used my on dash GPS for years until I got one. My GM dealer charged me hundreds to finally replace it. After that truck was long gone I got a recall notice. Only 12, sure.

Well, we the people have been conditioned to love drama. And lots of v8 and diesel loving Americans have been salivating and creating drama around a 4 banger goes into a half ton lol...but it's been 5 years of nothing but winning as GM knew it could spell the end for their bread and butter segment. That's why it's one of only two they couldn't kill/seize in their torture testing. People were slow to realize and still a long ways to go that this is built as a gas powered diesel etc. as a long stroke truck engine. Anyway, it's nothing but drama, these things will be around a long time.

The drama is their own fault. The big three have unleashed experiments on us all. GM seems to be the worst. Even though they have built some of the best vehicles. Ford has some winners as has Ram. Unfortunately I’ve experience most of them. Ok I’ll name some GM 5.7 diesel, 6.5, the transmission behind the 6.5 diesel. I’m still not behind their cylinder deactivation. Ford 6.0 diesel after the indestructible 7.3. Rams 2000s 5.9 diesel after the prior indestructible 5.9. That’s just a few examples. So it may take awhile to fully trust the truck 4cylinder.

  • 3 weeks later...

Plug change @53317 miles. A 30 min job that took me 3hrs because I am a brain damaged gimp.
Discoloration from heat on 1&4 noting lower heat discoloration on 2&3 which are not firing most of the time.
1/2/4 are normal. #3 has oil residue all the way up the thread.
Iridium contacts on ground and electrode are showing wear and I’m changing early ( recommended interval 60,000 miles).

@Fondupot  thanks again for your video for those that forget where they are. 🫡

I did have to remove the two nuts on RH side ( as I faced it ) cover aft mount and pull up to get #4 coil and boot out.

Your plugs @96000 miles looked like my 1/2/4.

It’s smoother with fresh plugs will let readers know if mpg improves.

Oil consumption is nil right now at 3000 miles on latest oil change interval.
