gen 2

Thanks,  Gen 3 might slow oil usage. 33 PSI of MAX boost is a lot and I think it stresses the oil significantly via higher sulfated ash count making deposits.  Its using a lot of boost all the time and acting like a damn turbine effect on the oil at high temp areas.

Fans of L3B this is an 4 cylinder engine that cruises on 2 cylinders built around a turbo integral to the head and exhaust as one molded unit. It acts like a compression engine but behaves for the oil like a turbine.

Localized heating is controlled by exotic coolant and oil techniques but we need some seriously stable base oils to moderate the oil usage. Not make ash deposits.  MIL5606 and MIL23699 come to mind. 02BlackSilverado worked for years on F16 engines and knows what I speak  about. The bearings of the turbine cannot handle too much heat without cooling oil flow that is stable.

I'm thinking out loud tonight about this issue.

if you dont express you get depressed lol thinking out loud is how thing get done. tomorrow i am going to look at how to install a boost gauge, i really want to know how this engine reacts in different situations

Mike just showed you a boost gauge with benefits above from AFe.

Has no one tried the AFE Scorcher for the 2.7?  I get tempted every so often.

Mike that looks for real but its gonna build boost faster than was designed for.  I would worry about 2 cylinder ops and economy benefits degrading from too much boost when its really not needed.

i am waiting for the 3rd boost gauge to arrive, first gauge was defective and the second gauge only goes to 15 lbs for boost. in the short time i have been monitoring , customboss might be right about developing boost, most of my driving is in the 50 to 55 mph range and at those speeds and level ground this engine is not using any boost and actually stays on the vacuum side of the gauge a lot. i am still waiting for the 3rd gauge to show up before i can be really sure. i am using mechanical gauges as there is no where to put an electrical sensor in the intake manifold

I love the way you learn. 😉

Drove 406 miles yesterday from Costilla County CO to Sidney, Nebraska on 2 lane highways to avoid Interstate 25 and idiots....

60 mph using cruise control. Tail winds most of the way. 26.2 mpg running Maverik E15 mixed with 6.6 gallons Kroeger 91 octane.  1600 miles on Havoline Pro-Rs 5w30 dexos1 GEN2.  ( DEXOS licensed Havoline to test oil consumption at end of drain issues).

Darn Trail Boss custom is nice and comfy cruising out in eastern CO.  I am pretty much crippled after sitting for 6-7 hours so for me to say comfy is true.

I did confirm that our cabin filter cannot stop feedlot ammonia smell......💨 🤣  nor can you outrun it in western NE or Eastern CO.  I remember the stank of the sugar beet processing in years past and it stunk too.

Mine seems to only use oil when run really hard at high speeds. It doesn’t use enough to worry about in between oil changes but I change my oil every 3-4K miles. I will say Mobil 1 ep seems to use almost no oil between changes in normal use. I’m about to put Mobil 1 0w-30 in since our temp  have been getting down in the -20f’s. I haven’t had any issues with starting in these temps but better for the engine with cold starts I think.  The trail boss has been really excellent in deep snow. We had 2 feet of snow and then 40 mph winds. The road to our farm wasn’t plowed for several days and the only vehicle that could make it out was my trailboss. The conditions were really bad but she handled it just fine and I never felt like I was going to get stuck.

Mine uses about a 1 to 1.25 quarts in ~6000 miles. That's about when the OLM says 20% remaining. I now top it off around 3000 miles in between oil changes to make sure it doesn't run low. GM dealer says its normal. I find it baffling that a vehicle in 2022 uses that much oil and is considered normal.

I've been using Mobile 1 5W30. Just switched to Valvoline Full Syn 5W30. I don't expect it to use any less oil, its just what I had available at the last oil change. My truck sees a lot of highway driving around 70-80mph.

Regarding the fuel economy discussion:  With my '22 2.7 HO I am able to achieve 19.5/20 MPG on highway driving when I am really gentle with the throttle and stick around the area of the speed limit.  Around town I get 16, again, driving very gently.  This is quite better than the 4.8L in my 2013 that I got rid of.
