How do you adjust the tailgate?

Recommended Posts

My tailgate doesn't seem to sit level. When lowered the DS cable is taunt, but the PS has some free play. This wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't for all the posts about how crappy GM's tailgate cables are -- I don't want to push my luck by having one cable do more work then it should.

I've looked all around the tailgate but I can't see how you make an adjustment. Can anybody shed some light on this for me?

I work in the Oshawa Truck Plant. You may want to try to loosen & lower the LH striker bolt & the part of the trunnion that is bolted to the LH boxside. I'm not saying this works, but it might be worth a try.

BOTH cables broke on my 98 Z71 at the same time! I bought new ones and they were like you describe. I tried EVERY nut and bolt on that thing and nothing made much difference. What I finally did was to take a round file and file out the hole in the cable until I took away just enough material to make them both hold equally. IT WORKS!
