Options for LTZ Colored Bumpers

Recommended Posts

Soon I will be getting an LTZ model instead of the High Country.  I was wondering...

1. I’ve read mixed results on the forums about painting the chrome.   Anybody have experience with this?  Are the sensors affected- recalibration needed?

2. Does anyone have a part number for the High Country bumpers?  I’m assuming these don’t come painted from the factory?

3. Are the RST bumpers identical to the High Country?

Thanks for any replies.   I’ve been trying to educate myself before I make my purchase and this forum has been very helpful.

I know you can wrap them but not sure how that would stand up to rock chips. I also have an LTZ and could do without the chrome bumpers but saw no reason to spend the extra coin on an HC.

I can’t really justify the extra cost of the HC either.   I love the look though.

I also purchased an LTZ over the highcounty for two reasons... I don’t like the interior options and they don’t offer the highcountry in Shadow Gray.

I have been wanting to get rid of that chrome bumper on mine as well. I got a quote from a local shop that does truck conversions to paint match my bumpers but I’m also wondering how it would hold up. They are a pretty well known company “ SCA” ( Southern Comfort) and they paint a lot of their chrome bumpers to paint match the truck.

I could have went either way and bought mine based on what was in stock locally. To get the options I wanted either one was stickering over 60k so the financial benefit wasn’t really there. Although if you just want the 6.2 and a few other things, the LTZ is a great value.

I think I like the HC exterior more, but I really don’t like the gold trim on the inside of them. I’m also not one of the anti-chrome people so the LTZ is fine for me.

I’ve seen enough color-matched Chevy trucks around here with stone chips all over the front bumper, and rust all over the back bumper. There’s already people posting on the Facebook group about their T1’s painted bumpers peeling so maybe the chrome will catch on again. I’d say be careful whatever you do as it could wind up looking like crap pretty quick.

Most common option is to wrap it. Rock chips can definitely be fixed without a total rewrap by the vinyl shop. Could be free touch ups if u ask them nicely :) and they would be able to wrap the sensors with them still being fully functional.  I heard it was a big no no to paint chrome.

of course the best option would be to do a complete bumper swap but that is a pricey trade off.

Where would you go to get it wrapped?

If I had my choice I would just have it painted or swap it with original HC  parts.   I’d heard wraps were a option but I don’t really know what my expectations should be and I don’t really know much about them (does it look stock).   I know it would be high but I wonder what HC bumpers cost?    I couldn’t seem to locate them when I dug through the catalog.

As far as I can tell it’s about a 5K upcharge for me if I went for the HC.  I think my wife would rather spend 2K on parts, paint, or a wrap if that’s all I really wanted the HC for :)

Been waiting on some incentives but but there’s not much out there.

My LTZ has had a small rust spot forming on the front bumper since I got it. Next time it goes in I'm going to see what the upcharge would be for getting a painted bumper put on instead since its getting replaced reguardless. Yea, I'll have a chrome rear and painted front bumper for a while untill I get that sorted out though.  but I was looking at it today and that may not look too bad since the front has that giant chrome bumper insert anyways, so theres still plenty of chome up there.

Interesting. Didn't know anything like this existed. Thanks for the link. I am just curious how it would fit on the bumpers that have sensors.

On the 14 to 18s they make ones with holes for sensors

Chrome can be painted reliably.  You have to scuff it a bit and make sure to use a good Epoxy primer.  I am debating on paint my chrome bumpers.  Regardless of how well they are painted they will chip.  The factory ones do.  I really wanted to paint mine but it sure has been nice driving and not be worried about chips.  If you paint then your best bet is to have paint protection film applied.  The cost starts to add up quickly.

Eventually the painted bumpers if you drive a lot and do not protect them start to look bad. My 13 Ram looked terrible when I traded it.
