Active aero grill shutters?

Recommended Posts

Doesn’t make sense to remove them, if there is additional cooling needed, I would think they could program them to open if certain parameters are reached. I agree with @newdude that you’re probably better off without them. Not sure on a 2019 but on the K2 they really make mounting a light bar behind the grill a PITA.

Should you say but it does enough to the point i went looking the day after i picked up because warm up time (time it took to have heat) was noticably longer than my17 ltz 6.2.  Made it through 2 winters with zero return to dealer issues with ltz, trans had me worried for first few thousand but did get better and even was “normal” after 10k and i work afternoons so get out 10pm to 1am no freeze up

got best 28mpg, total lifetime never reset since off the lot 18080 miles 16.8 and on trips got a easy 22-24mpg, all summer pull 7x14 landscape trailer with 1100lb zero turn mower

Just find it funny/Contradicting eco motor cylinder deactivation for fuel economy and yet remove the shutters

I assume you’re replying to someone else? I only said it didn’t make sense to remove them. There is obviously no way for them to break if ya don’t have them. I don’t understand why they felt compelled to remove them if additional cooing is needed....just program to open when needed??

I’m not an engineer but presumably when the engine is started cold and the t-stat is closed, is anything even flowing through the rad at that point? In other words, how would the shutters help warm it up any faster?

I would imagine they didn’t fit them because even when they are open it does restrict airflow. Probably not a huge amount but if you’re towing something heavy in the summer, maybe every little bit helps??

Also, did the EPA fuel economy numbers go up at all with the introduction of them in 2017?

Was responding to newdude not mark

seems counter productive removing them is all i believe and should be shown somewhere as to them being removed with X option added

mabey at stand still no difference in warm up but driving down the road at 0 degrees has to pass less cold air over the motor with shutters closed i would think and noticed my usual spot the auto heat kicked on was extended a few mile further i noticed first night leaving work

when i remote start standing with my ear on the grill area i hear a quick click mabey someone with shutters on a 19 can look and listen and see it that is the motor closing the shutters

will speak with local dealer tommorow and poke around looking to see what is there and not when warmer

Ok.

Flipped through the catalog with some VINs.

NHT with both the 5.3 and 6.2 do NOT come with active grille shutters.  The grille shutter frame is present, and that is it.  No shutters.

NHT cooling requirements eliminate the shutters and their actuation.  If you were to attempt to install, the wiring, etc. would not be present.

If you really, really, really have to have them, trade the truck?

EDIT:

Adding the shutter RPO codes.  NHT trucks won't have either show up in their build.  Also, WT/Custom/Custom TB with the old engines/6 speed don't have shutters either.

VTI - Single Shutter.  5.3 L84 and 6.2 L87.

WMI - Dual Shutter.  2.7T4 only.

I was working on a 2018 Colorado ZR2 Duramax the other day and had to replace most of the front end because of a deer hit. I had to get a new shutter assembly for it and when it showed up there were no shutters in it. I called the dealer and he said that is the way they are spec'd. I had 2 block off plates for the lower shutters and nothing installed in the top.  Ask the engineering dept. , right?

Be nice to have on my 17 HD as it would stop the truck from cooling itself off at idle when it's cold outside.  Switching to e fans would accomplish that too but the good old e78 ecm doesn't have the mental capacity to accomplish electric fan control on the trucks.
