Ceramic Coating

Recommended Posts

Think of Ceramic Coating as a glass screen protector on your phone screen. It is a hard coating covering your exterior surfaces that will MINIMIZE scratches and swirl markings. The

foreign material ie bugs, brake dust etc usually wash off with ease, so washing your vehicle is less damaging. If you take care washing your vehicle ie two bucket method, you minimize

swirls and scratches. The appearance of the paint stays the same as it was the first day you bought it. Just wash it and no wax needed. So maintenance is reduced if you like to keep the shine.

There are many products and costs vary. Warranties can run one year to 9 years, but the cost escalates linearly. A good shop will prepare your paint first and then properly apply their product.

The product when applied correctly will take alot of effort to take off ie 2000 grit sandpaper and manual labor. There are a few shops that do good work, but I have Ziebart do most of my vehicles.

So the shop knows me and my family. My 2019 HC was my first Ceramic job. Usually I get the Diamond Gloss product which basically is a sealant and needs to be reapplied yearly. There have been some problems, but Ziebart has always made it right. I was very pleased with the Ceramic Coating and I could tell the difference between the sealant and ceramic. Whatever shop you choose, you owe it to yourself to try it once to see the results now and over a period of time. Your price of 1200.00 is reasonable for their process.

Wax? People still use wax?

Yep, or a polymer product.  A few times a year I get to run my hands over every square inch of Pepper. Find every flaw and correct them. Paint correction is needed after you screw it up. Don't screw it up. :) Factory paint is quite hard. Chips easy and is pretty easy to repair but missing a spot to metal for some time is where blisters start. Most that ceramic coat expect they don't need to look that close anymore. It won't prevent chips either.

I stopped and got a quote from a local shop that does nothing but ceramic coating. Aurora Motor Spa in Buffalo MN.

Owner is the same guy that does the work. Very knowledgeable about the process and a super nice guy.

He had two black trucks in his shop today and showed me his work.

One was a Dodge mega cab with 75,000 miles on it and was done . It was curing ( it takes a couple days to cure) It looked brand new. He showed some before pictures and it was full of swirls. The finished product is unbelievable how good it looked .

The other truck was a 2018 Silverado Z71 lifted Crew cab with 7000 miles on it . He was half done with the paint correction.  You could really tell what was done and what he hadn't touched yet . That alone showed me the quality of his work. Top shelf in my book and that's what I want.

He uses Ceramic Pro and gtechnic

He quoted me $1600 for the Ceramic Pro and $1200 for the gtechnic. I'm going with Ceramic Pro.

Truck goes in a week from today and takes 4-5 days including the cure time. He said my paint is in real good shape so it won't take too much to have it corrected. I can't wait to see it when he's done with it.

Keep us posted and put up some pics when he is done.

I live in the twin cities area and thinking about having my black 18 LTZ done.

Tom

I talked to quite a few shops around town and stopped in a few and when I stopped here I knew right away he was doing my truck.

Tom (Fuelie) , I can pretty much say you will want to bring your truck here. Place is clean as a whistle.

I can actually get lots of in progress pictures. I hit it off with the owner real well . He is cool and a straight shooter.

In addition to my Carpenter job,  my Wife and I own an Antique Store 6 blocks from there so I can stop in and take tons of pictures while he is working on it. I'll also get pics of other vehicles he is working on. He told me a lot of his work is black trucks. No surprise there .

Stay tuned.

Brought the truck to his shop this morning . He broke out the inspection light and gave it a good look over. He showed me scratches and paint defects that I never saw before.

He washed it and did the clay bar today. Took about 6 hours . It already looks way better. Tomorrow he starts to polish it. He said it will take most of the day to get that done.  He is a one man operation.

Here is some pics from today

I never could see this until he lit it up with his lights . These will buff out.

Remember this truck only has 3200 miles on it and is garaged, never been through a brush or soft touch wash.

Also I must say his shop is sanitary.

If you are in the Twin City area this is where you want to bring your truck.

He's got about 18 hours total into the paint correction. For a brand new truck it sure had a lot of crap wrong with it. It looks unbelievable after it's been all buffed out. He puts on the first coat of ceramic tomorrow. I not getting it back until the middle of next week. That's fine with me we have two snowstorms coming in the next few days. At least another foot on the way .

I'm starting to get a little crabby about this weather. It's getting old.
