The "Catch Can" Explained - By Elite Engineering

Recommended Posts

oh gotcha!

I did my first oil change yesterday. I had a large funnel (like 2' long) so I was able to still reach the oil fill hole. it's somewhat obstructed by the UPR lines but not bad enough that you can't reach it. Coming from a Honda Odyssey and a Subaru before that, I am very please with the amount of space I have to maneuver in the engine bay, under the truck, inside the truck, etc.

Excellent! Somewhere in this thread I think I posted a pic of the oil cap and dipstick access with my fender mount, my lines are completely out of the way. UPR is a good can too.

First pic 100 miles, second 400 miles. These things work!

And now at 650 miles...

Wow, your engine sure seems to put a lot in the can.  After about 400-500 miles, I got about 2 oz of mostly water.  It looked like a coffee with way too much cream in it if you know what I mean.  I didn't keep it or take a pic of it, but it seemed like a very small amount.  We're heading out on a road trip tomorrow so I'll check it again when we get back.  Total trip will be about 2500 miles round trip.

Well Mike, this is a running total at 650 miles and the Pyrex container is pretty small...still I am completely happy with the results so far...here is a size comparison for reference. All I know is this is not making it down to my intake/valves!

I think part of it is the can we run. Don’t know what you’re running but they all help to some extent. My can(s) are mounted on the fender too away from the extreme heat, still gets hot but you can still touch it after shutdown.

I have the Elite E2-X with CSS.  It's mounted on the radiator core support just to the driver's side of the fan shroud.  It stays pretty cool, I think.  It's still winter in Denver.  Spring starts in May here.  We'll see he cool it stays next week while we're at the beach.  I would expect much less water in warmer weather.

You should have no problems in Colorado with the summer, or winter months...

.. since I plumbed the drain line on mine I've been emptying mine on a weekly basis.. both because of the temperature fluctuations this time of year promoting condensation.. and the fact that it is just so easy to open the valve and dump it into a waste oil container

.. I haven't been measuring.. I have a rubber line routed down along the outside of my frame so I just place a used 5L (5.3qt) oil jug on the ground under it and open the valve.  I checked my can after the first 1000 miles and the catch can was about half full.. so from a 12oz can that's roughly 6oz in 1000 miles

That’s a great way to empty, very easy and mess free. I put the little Pyrex on my spare battery tray, open both valves and have a Coke...after the Coke, I close both valves and take the Pyrex out, put the lid on and just put it on the shelf until next empty cycle. I’m only saving it for the first 1000 miles to show others how it’s working. I’ll empty it after I get to 1000 miles and from then on. No mess, no holding a water bottle, so same easy empty as you have just different procedures! Love the no mess part.
