The "Catch Can" Explained - By Elite Engineering

Recommended Posts

I basically followed how the name brand ones are built. Now obviously I couldn't get that quality but having the air have to pass thru a medium...Such as the steel mesh it gets "caught". Air can flow thru while liquids get trapped. I'm pretty happy with the look and outcome. Cost me less than 50 bucks all done

I'll snap some pics of how I mounted mine. I went off this build

http://www.evolutionm.net/forums/evo-how-tos-installations/485682-how-another-diy-catch-can-mod-dual-baffles-extended-inlet-tube.html

The CC cost ~ 20 bucks off eBay

I went to HD after I got the CC and got a 2 ft long piece of 3/8 inch copper tubing. I first bent the tubing since it's easier to do at 2 ft than 6 inches.

His tubing goes almost right to the bottom of the can. My worry was once fluid got in, even with the air holes, it may become blocked. So I made my pipe have a space of about 1 inch from the bottom of the can. Then I drilled "breather" holes roughly 3/4 of an inch apart so I have I think 5 holes. Once my pipe was drilled, cut and finished I JB welded it into the underside of the cover. I checked placement and angle and then let it sit a full day for the JB weld to set. After it was cured I put the SS in, and I made a cover above the SS with a hole for the pipe to slide thru but halt any SS from trying to escape. Bolted it all together and installed. Let me see if I can find some pics

The screen is similar to this. It's thinners pre screened aluminum I got at HD. Was able to cut it with metal shears and cut it to fit on top of the SS baffling. I formed it into the shape of the top of a shoe box. The edges (about 1/2 inch each side) make it unable to tip sideways

In regard to the Elite Engineering set up....anyone else have this problem?

I'm getting an overwhelming oil smell in the cabin & outside of the truck. I checked all hose connections, no leaks....Sent Elite Engineering an email and received a response recommending I disconnect the Cold Side Separator and reinstall the factory oil cap, and drive it around a while. Sure enough the smell went away. I reinstalled the CSS and it's back. I checked my hose hookups and I'm hooked up correctly. Is it possible my CSS is faulty? Elite hasn't responded to my April 18th email or the 2 voice mails I left them. I don't want to be left with a $350 paper weight...

Anyone have a solution to this?

Hi Brian,

Sorry for the trouble. Shoot us an email, (sometimes they get lost in the shuffle) and we'll get this figured out. Maybe the CSS is not sealing correctly around the o-rings.

Thanks!

The clean-side separator (CSS) completes any Catch Can installation by diverting clean, or fresh incoming air through the unit that replaces the oil fill cap. It has internal coalescing media designed to trap and contain oil that is part of the crankcase vapors when flow is momentarily “back flowing” with a single outlet system or the OEM PCV system.

The check valve, gets installed in the exit line, and flow away from the Catch Can. It keeps the Catch Can from the possibility of getting pressurized. Not always needed on a non-forced induction or turbo application.

It'd be nice if the CSS was integrated into the twist-on cap and not a grommet. That design looks like a leak and/or vapor vent waiting to happen.

I just got my elite catch can on. It took probably 30 minutes start to finish, pretty simple. I installed the can above the spare battery tray, I figured it would be easier to drain that way. I haven't driven it but did notice a hiss coming from the area while at idle. I will update after my first drain.

Not a big fan of check valves IF they impede the flow of vacuum through them to the intake plenum. If you have a hard time blowing through one before installation, throw it away. You're better without it.

It's all about the flow through the catch can.
