Audio improvement with stock radio

Recommended Posts

thats what i was thinking because not too much power sent through the factory wires but still enough to drive the speakers. how would i wire the amp— tap the lines with the lc6 then run rca to the amp the cut the wires and put the amp output wires to the factory ones by the headunit to the speakers.

Rcas from the lc unit. Amp turn on from the lc unit. Power wore from the battery and a ground from somewhere in the cab

I did the same as Maxsuperdog, ran the stock signal out to my amplifer, under the connector that runs to the door and then from the amplifier back to the speaker through the same gap. There is plenty of room to fit two pairs of 16 gauge wire through the hole. I mounted the amplifier behind my backseat against the rear wall. I had to cut out some insulation to fit it. Rear doors were upgraded as well but do not add much to my front doors. I am running a pioneer GM-8604 to drive some infinity 6x9s and a kicker 12 under the rear seat. I started with just the speaker upgrade which did sound much better, but the Infinity speakers are 3 ohm which seemed to cause problems with the stock unit after 5-10 min at max volume, the unit began to cut in and out. Instead of messing up the factory unit i decided to add amplifiers for the door speakers. A good amplifier will always make a huge difference in your aftermarket speakers. I found the Pioneer GM-8604 was the cheapest (~$130) most configurable (1 ohm stable per channel) 4 channel powerful (up to 150w/ch) amplifier I have found to date. It has very good sound (to me) and cranks the heck out of my 6x9s and sub. I have had other cheap (~40) no name amplifiers that have been terrible quality, don't waste your money.  I left the dash speakers stock running off of the stock unit and i get plenty of treble out of them combined with my 3 way 6x9s. (even tho they are at your feet) Hope this helps!

If you use a speaker with high dB sensitivity, they will perform "ok" with the stock head units power output. Will definitely be an improvement over stock, but certainly doesn't beat speakers powered by an amp.
