DD + occasional towing... 6.2 1500 vs 6.0 2500

I went from an 01 2500HD duramax to my current truck and agree. Especially since I have a very short daily commute (~3km). But I also see that a gas (6.6L) 2500 will have a payload just short of 4K lbs and as I'm near the limit of what my NHT will pull, it is intriguing.

I'm okay with 400hp, but I wish the gas came with more than a 6 speed.

I went from an 01 2500HD duramax to my current truck and agree. Especially since I have a very short daily commute (~3km). But I also see that a gas (6.6L) 2500 will have a payload just short of 4K lbs and as I'm near the limit of what my NHT will pull, it is intriguing.

I'm okay with 400hp, but I wish the gas came with more than a 6 speed.

You mean the gas 6.0 not 6.6, that’s diesel. My DMAX had 6 speed too and I totally agree, should’ve had at least an eight. I’d give it till 2022, that’s when I’m expecting even more changes for the DMAX power train. It almost always seems to be, two years after the introduction of a new body then comes more with power train too. Watch for it........

No, the 2020 HDs will have a 6.6 gasser with 6 gears. The Dmax is getting 10 gears.

I need a middle ground. I don't want a diesel DD (did that and ended up parking it in the winter) but am right at the limit of what my NHT is capable of. Doubling my payload would be really nice.

Just did a little calculation regarding my 2500 6.0 and the 30 mpg claim given earlier with a 1500 6.2.

My 2500 has been on E85 for about 2 years exclusively. Currently $1.12 a gallon. On road trips, my 2500 on E85 has gotten roughly 13.8 mpg average. At $1.12 a gallon for E85, that comes to about 8 cents a mile fuel cost. Sounds horrible.... but wait.

Premium fuel is going for $2.51 a gallon in my area. For a 1500 6.2 to get the same 8 cent per mile fuel cost, it would have to get 30 mpg average.

So, I have far more capability with my 2500 6.0, and it costs me the same in fuel cost per mile compared to a 1500 6.2. Does anyone but me see the problem of buying a less capable pickup truck, for more money, and it end up costing just as much to operate? Can one get a 1500 6.2 with snow plow prep package, tow package with integrated controller, 5th wheel / gooseneck prep package, Line-X bed liner, for $38K like it cost me for my 2500?

Maybe I am missing something.

It's all in what YOU want from you vechile. Same as for me. Mine is what works for me.

Tough call, how many miles per year are you putting on the truck? I drive about 30k miles a year so it would be difficult for me to go from my 5.3L 1500 getting 22 mpg hwy to a 6.0 2500 getting 15 mpg hwy but, I'd love to have the additional braking and suspension capabilities of an HD truck... It's so easy to exceed the brakes and suspensions on the light duty trucks..

Sorry but everywhere i have ever seen E85 it was not less than 50% the price of regular/premium. usually 70%-80%. it sure seems to me the corn sellers and fuel companies know exactly how many miles you get per $ you pay and it all equalizes out E10, E85 or diesel

I only have 1 E85 gas station by me and the price and a couple of weeks ago E85 was $2.00 a gallon and regular was 2.25 a gallon. They seem to have it worked out by me that you never save by going to e85. I am in NY about an hour outside of the city. .

Same here, I see no savings per mile where I drive between E85 and 87 octane.

I'm looking at Gas buddy right now and 87 is going for $2.29 and up in Cleveland. E85 starts at $1.84. Course, if you only traverse certain roads, you pay what they want.

Those Gen V motors make a lot more power on E85 and probably suffer less loss in mpg as a result. The average for my old truck is less than a 3 mpg difference.

I only have 1 E85 gas station by me and the price and a couple of weeks ago E85 was $2.00 a gallon and regular was 2.25 a gallon. They seem to have it worked out by me that you never save by going to e85. I am in NY about an hour outside of the city. .

Im on long island, 87 2.67 e85 1.89. I have noticed that outside of long island e85 is higher.

Maybe I haven't paid that much attention... My truck isn't flex fuel though...

Not officially but the software and wiring is there to convert it for use of Flex Fuel. There is an active thread about the parts needed if interested.
