help please ....??

Recommended Posts

I bought the "xenon" lights off ebay too - the 9005 and 9006 (one set for low beam, one for high) I also bought a set of the bulbs (they are different bulbs) for the fog lights. Within a few weeks, I noticed that the entire lamp assembly had melted off and was rattling around inside the fog lamp housing. Had to totally replace the two fog lights, so I put all the stock bulbs back in before they melted my main headlights too. My suggestion - don't use them. At all. Ever. :chevy:

Oh...but the high beams looks so cool in the fog lights! Heh. I've had 9005s in the fogs for about three or four days now. I notice the extreme heat, but no melting as of yet. Read somewhere (think it was a Ford site) that the highs wouldn't get hot enough to melt the housing (it was a Ford site though, so it might be different with GM). I don't know though. I have an 03 GMC (new fog design). Might be different. We'll see, however I am a bit worried about damaging something

Take em out. These so call 'Xenon HID' lamps are nothing of the sort. They are blue tinted lamps and it is the glass not the gas inside that gives them the 'look'.

Unfortunately, the coloring of the glass reduces the light oputput at certain frequencies so much so that the lamp manufacturer increases the wattage of the lamp to compensate for the output.

I tried a set off of eBay for my Volvo S60. The stock lamp was 55W, the 'cool' lamp was 100W !!!

After about a month, the lamps had melted the wiring harness feeding the lamp (through heat from the lamp).

There is a reason why you can get a set of these from eBay for $8

They're crap. Carry a fire extinguisher in your rig. You may need it.

I know a lot of people really like the Sylvania Silverstar's, including myself. No stories of anything melting on the headlamps. Do a search here on the board for 'em. Most ppl rave about them and they don't promise you outrageous wattage output. Just a brighter white light instead of the yellow from plain halogen lamps.

I've been running them for about 3 months now with no problems or signs of anything over heating.

:( I do know to stay away from the R&D kits that let you run the low and high beams at once. It's too much pull on the wiring and has caused some wires to get a little "crispy" on ppl's trucks right here on the board.

Goodluck on what ever you decide.

Well, I'm convienced. I'm taking out my xenons as of right now. No sense taking a change of $$ damage with cheap @$$ bulbs. Thanks for the help....maybe I'll just save up for a couple of denali projection headlight assemblies...heh. As of right now stocks will do I suppose. I have to look into some of those silverstars. Very cool look.

Anybody know if Sylvania makes the silverstar lamps for denali projector lights? The Denali lamps use 2 high beam bulbs for the lows and highs, because of the projector the highs are just aimed downward. Usually high beam bulbs have a painted section on the top so the light goes backwards and reflects back foward - which allows you to aim the high beams and spread out the light more. But I'm sure you all know this already.

Moral of the story is if you put a bulb with this painted top on it in the Denali projector, it will cut off 90% of the light coming out of it. Or maybe it won't, that's why I'm asking

Ideas?

I guess I'm the lone dissenter here regarding the hi-wattage xenon bulbs!

I have 80W lows, 100W highs, with a mod done in the fuse box for both on at the same time. Been running them for over a year now, no problems whatsoever. The wiring is run through a fuse, the wires are sized so that the fuse should blow before you ever cause a problem with the wiring. It does pull extra on your alternator.

Just my 2 cents' worth!
