Android Auto - Randomly Closing

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I've been meaning to post my experiences with Android Auto in my 19 trail boss. I have a Pixel 2 XL phone running the latest version of Android OS (v.9 with Dec. security patch) along with the latest version of Android Auto (v.3.8.584564). I also have the latest version of Chevy Mylink installed on my truck.

So I have been experiencing random android auto app closes while listing to Spotify or using Google Maps for navigation. I have tried troubleshooting the problem by switching usb cables, which I am using type c, wiping my "managed cars" from within android auto, I also have tried factory resetting my phone completely without restoring from a backup. Some days are better then others for how long the app will display without randomly closing. When this problem does occur I can usually just select "Android Auto" on Mylink and the app will launch again, sometimes. I wasn't sure if there are any other daily Android Auto users out there having the same trouble as me on their trail boss?

*Edit: I also experience audio issues in AA every now and again. I will plug my phone in and play a song through Spotify using AA and the audio's volume will be lower then the FM radio. I've tried making the adjustments using my phone's volume buttons but it doesn't result in a change through Mylink. I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in and like magic the audio is much louder.

**Edit2: The audio issue I mentioned in my previous edit is no longer happening to me. I suspect a recent Chevy MyLink update resolved that. I ordered a factory USB type-c cable from Google Store and I am awaiting it's arrival. I'll post back with my results.

I'll update my post with additional info when I get the chance. I appreciate any thoughts or solutions.

Thanks!

The only issues I have with AA, and it's not specific to my AT4, is the ability to do anything on Google Maps or Waze.

For example, I cannot push in the red message button on the Waze map like I used to be able to do, in order to update traffic conditions etc.

In Google Maps, I am unable to start navigation from the screen.

I used to be able to do both of these things, so I think it's a bug in the app.

I'm using a pixel 3, connected to the dash usb-c without any issues. The usb-c in the center console only charges, which I'm going to have them look at. Have not had shutdowns, but have had the distracted driver "feature" frustrate me more than once. Volume is lower than fm, but I write that off to bring a different input.

Have you manually checked for a radio update?

I experience the same Android Auto reboots, pretty much at least once a trip. I am using a pixel 2 XL. Anyone tried using just Bluetooth without Android Auto, mine has 5 to 30 second delays from pushing the next song button on the steering wheel to it actually changing. So at least AA works better than that.

I used AA the first time with my cable. After the first use it connects to my motorola z force droid via Bluetooth.  No issues what so ever. I use PI music app on my phone. After start up as soon as my phone connects the radio picks up where it was on the selected playlist when I shut the truck off.

Those having problems is everyone using the USB cable?

It may be a pixel issue. I had the 2xl and upgraded to the 3xl due to issues with it. I've even replaced the 3xl with a second one due to continual Bluetooth issues. Coming from iPhones before that for years, Bluetooth problems have been the only issues I've had with the Android experience. I'm not using AA, but basic Bluetooth in my other cars and it's extremely buggy. I'm almost at the point of not getting the pixel 4 this fall and considering a LG or dreaded Samsung. I'll even go to a flip phone before getting forced back into iTunes. Sorry for the hijack, but I really think Google has Bluetooth issues and there are a bunch of issues reported in the Google forums.

Since the phone connects to Android Auto through cable, I don't think Bluetooth issue causes the disconnect. I believe Bluetooth may cause issues just in phone calls. I tried Android Auto without pairing my Galaxy S7's Bluetooth and no issue.

My pixel 2xl worked perfect with my 18 Sierra, so I think it could just be a mix of the pixel and the new GM software.
