What did you pay for your truck?

Recommended Posts

Yeah.  There is a lot of incentives that the dealers have we never really know about.  That is why I never get bogged down in incentives, discounts, etc.   Even with no “advertised” discounts and incentives, there is considerable wiggle room in any new auto/truck deal.

Not the same exact industry, but considerable similarities.  The RV sector.   I learned from a former dealer that a factory rep told him that to pay more than 25-30% off MSRP was too much.  I determined that I would never pay more than 20% off MSRP for any vehicle.   Since I learned that from a former dealer and stuck by the 80% of MSRP rule I set, I have never had to pay more than 80% of MSRP.   My 2015 2500 had a sticker of $48K.   I paid $38K and really didn’t have to deal much to get that.  It was not during one of those “Chevy Truck Month” or any other promotional.

This is really true. If you're patient enough with the rebates, you can easily score 20% off a new truck without much hassle.

I went to two dealerships today thinking I was going to negotiate and possibly buy a 2019 2500 LTZ, but basically all I got was their posted internet prices which were between 6 and 10% off MSRP plus the applied rebates.  I told them I wanted the dealership to kick in more than 10%.  Neither was interested in entertaining any offer I had that was less than what they presented me.  "Well, OK - bye."  It's been three years since I bought my last car, but did I miss something the past few years?  They didn't advertise as "no-haggle" dealerships, but essentially they were today.   Am I wrong to push for 20% off MSRP, in addition to my rebates?

^ Nah just need to find a volume dealer. The one I go to does about 30% off without negotiations. Nobody else around will even match them much less beat them. You get less friendly service, they don't try to butter you up or spend time chatting but their prices are what they are. My sales girl I keep going back to told me they don't even get commission, they get paid a $50 bonus no matter what vehicle they sell and then bonuses based on how many they sell.

MSRP: 61k

my price: 48k

Here is what i did recently to get 20% off of my truck.  On the last week of August i stopped by every dealership in my local area (6).  For the first 4 dealerships, i told them which truck i wanted and the price i wanted it for.  After being denied by all, i left each time and told them thank you, ill need some time to consider.  For the 5th dealership, i gave them a call before arriving, and told them, i have stopped by 4 other dealerships, and this is the price I'm looking for.  The sales rep obviously told me to come in, and they will do everything they can to get me my price.  When i arrived, after negotiating, the best price they gave me was 53k.  I told them thank you, i have one more dealership to stop by.  As i was leaving he stopped me and said they can do 51k.  I then called the final dealership and said, " Look, I've been to every dealership in this area, the dealership I'm at has offered me 51k and i am about to sign the deal, can you guys beat it?  He replied, "Yes sir, come down here right now and we will beat there price."  I snapped a photo of the price sheet and told the manager i appreciuate the offer but i have to due my due diligence and stop by the last dealership.  He said he understands and says his deal is locked untill the end of the day.  i arrived at the last dealership and at first they tried to sweet talk me and get me to actually buy the car for 54k. but once i told them I'm not here to play games and showed them the price sheet from the last dealership(51k) they came back and said they could only do 53k while ensuring me that their identical truck was "better" then the last dealerships(lol).  I got up out of my seat and started walking to the door, the manager comes out and says, "sir congratulations, you have a deal. 50k"  I then texted the other sales rep at the last dealership and let him know this dealership js offered 50k.  he replied back in 2 min and says "we'll do 49k".  I showed the text to the sales rep and he went back to his manager for 5 min, this time the manager came out to talk to me and you could tell he was irritated.  He said "Sir, you are getting a good deal, this truck is better then their truck, you need to stop trying to negotiate and take the offer."  I replied, no thank you, I'm going to get the truck for the best price.  He then walked back into his office and sent his sales rep back out 5 min later and gave me what i wanted at 48k.

First time I've done it this way and ill have to say it was the best car buying experience I've ever had. :D

Dealer near me is running billboard signs saying 17% off MSRP for 2019’s.  20% is very realistic.

something to use in a negotiation.  Any 2019, the minute you drive it off the lot it will loose 20-30% of its value.  Also, the dealer is having to pay whoever is bankrolling them every month for that vehicle to sit on the lot.  Once new model year vehicles start arriving, the odds of selling the previous model year vehicles drop.   The OEM already got their money for the vehicles.  They might help a dealer a little with some kickback, but that is limited.  If the dealer doesn’t want to negotiate, fine.  They can eat the cost on their floor plan by keeping it on the lot.

They may may not want to admit it, but you are doing them a favor by purchasing a 2019 at 20% off MSRP.

I'm not sure I would say you're necessarily doing them a favor, but I totally agree that you really need to hold out for 20% off MSRP.

Like Cowpie said, as soon as you leave the lot your $58K MSRP truck turns into a $46K truck - and that's being generous.

Do what nino did above. That's the way to do it! Sure, it takes a little time and patience, but saving $2-3K seems worthy of a few hours of my time.

So I sold my car yesterday and plan on shopping tomorrow.  One dealership said 20% was doable so now I am thinking I should shoot for 30% and have a little flexibility.  Anyone been able to get that on an RST model, my goal is to get the truck plus tax and tags out the door for under $40k.

Here are a couple examples that get close to 30% recently...

Sticker was 58k - Sierra SLT, Preferred Plus, X31, Plastic Floor Mats - after incentives, discounts, etc... 42k...    I see the same dealer now has 1 for ~1k less than we paid...  I should go get a refund :)

Just picked up '19 silverado LTZ double cab with 6.2l and tech package. MSRP was 57k and after sale and rebate I got it for 43k ( pre ttl). Thought it was quite the steal!

I think you could get close on an RST. It really depends on the options you're looking for.

Someone above mentioned ‘not on an at4’

Are the AT4 package trucks that rare that they will not deal on them as much?  All dealers in my area have multiple AT4 trucks on the lot from 19. I wouldn’t think they are rare enough to demand any more than any other model.

They are not that rare to find, no. GM just is not doing much with rebates on them right now because the AT4 and TBs are selling really well.

Ive been trying to deal on a at4, no luck at all just my supplier and the 2500 rebate they have beyond that nothing, noticed that some elevation crew cabs have come around, also noticed u can get max tow, and a moonroof, that maybe the route i take, i bet the 5.3/10sp/3 42 is a nice setup. My 5.3 3.42 tows my 9000 pounds very well, 10spd will now have a year out with gm, specwd to my liking around 54300, vs 62k for the at4 with 6.2
