What did you pay for your truck?

The dealer takes your zip code and uses the sales tax rate to estimate the taxes and fees owed for CA registration. You essentially pay for that in the purchase price and the dealer then cuts you a physical check payable to the DMV for that total estimated cost. I was handed a complete Title 'packet' that has all of the forms filled out, form of origin (or whatever its called), and everything the DMV needs to get it registered. When I got back to CA, I literally took that packet handed to my by the dealer to the DMV along with the check that was already cut, and the DMV lady did the rest. I walked in around 4:30PM not expecting it to go that well but I was out of there at 5:05PM with registration and plates. 

I forgot to mention I did drive to get it smogged on my way to the DMV and the DMV also did a 5 minute physical inspection on the truck (looked at the VIN/ID card/plate under hood). The desk lady who dealt with me was surprised that I had literally everything she needed in good order, so props to the dealer for making it as seamless as possible. 

 

ONE pretty disappointing snag in the whole process - as I said, the check that was cut payable to DMV and included in what I paid for the truck was an 'estimate' of fees and taxes and they make that clear. The dealer under estimated approx $500 so I had to pay that at the counter at the DMV unexpectedly. The Dealer got the sales tax pretty much spot on, but there were other 'DMV FEES' they did not get quite right. I can post it up if anyone wants to see. I mean those fees would have been tacked on no matter where I bought the truck so not a huge deal. Big fat welcome to CA tax.

Wow, good to know it's so easy, sound like you can finance the whole thing then?  Maybe I'll do that on the next go around.

 

Probably hard for them to keep up with all the various taxes and fees they keep tacking on here in CA.  My annual registration bills have been getting ridiculous lately.

19 Denali 5.3. Everything except heads up display. 5850.  Upon delivery, found out the gas cap less tank would not allow fuel.  They fixed it and gave me 2 additional oil changes and tanks of fuel.

Gm retiree discount saved about 5k.

My guess is your discount wouldn't be much better than the rebates on something new. A buddy of mine owns a dealership and drove his LT TB for 9K miles, and traded it in on an AT4 recently. They were selling his used LT TB for more than I bought my new, loaded RST after the rebates in March.

If it hasn't been put into service yet, they are still selling it as a new truck, right?  So you should be able to get all the rebates and everything with it?

 

I think the biggest question is, what's it worth to you?  Maybe 10% off what you would pay for the same new truck?  If they meet your number, do it, if not, get a new one.  I would check with some other dealers on the new truck pricing though, they may inflate what they would sell you a new truck for to make the demo look like a better deal.

Dealership near me advertises their demos and loaners around 1500.00 more off than brand new. Most of em have around 5000 on the odometer. Here is an AT4 they currently have for about 1400.00 off on top of regular discount even though they will discount much more. I have negotiated about 15000.00 off a brand new AT4 I hope to go get this week.

In my experience they won't do much if anything on a demo. A dealer once gave me a better deal on brand new with 50 miles (most were by me) than they wanted for exact same demo with almost 4,000 miles. They have usually been driven hard and put away wet because people are doing test drives and employees drive the heck out of them, then they are sold "as new" later, and usually no extension to the manufacturers' warranty. You can always get an extended warranty for a price, but I would stay away from "demos' and just buy a good, low mileage used vehicle for cheaper if going that route.

Hard to beat deals at Everett Buick GMC in Bryant, Ark where I once knew one of the managers before he passed away.  Laura Buick GMC in Collinsville, IL (near St Louis, MO) is a pretty good volume dealer located in that part of the world with good prices as well.

Well u guys are pretty much spot on they were only gonna drop another 1100 for the miles, i didnt think that was anything special, in the end it was about 9500 to 10 off, nobody in this area will deal, heading on vacation tomorrow so im all done shopping for now was hoping to trade before warranty is up

My spec AT4 right now is $76,100CAD OTD ($56,500usd). Dbl Cab SLT 6.2L. and that is at ZERO % aand $5k msrp off. Still haven't pulled the trigger as my same spec 2015 was over $13K less and my same spec 2010 was $31k less. I get a jump due to steel prices and inflation, but that pricing is out to lunch. They want $100k for a Denali Diesel these days, the last Dmax I bought new was in 2005, and I thought it was insanely expensive then at $40,000.

Trucks are utter insanity up here... pulled my buddies window sticker out on his 2014 LT today... was like 46400.  It's a leather heated seat digital climate, command start truck.  Same thing new stickers closer to 60k... like get bent.  Even my 2017 2500HD which is a Bose, console, heated cloth SLE was 64500... a half ton today with the same options is that much or more.  Enough is enough.

 

The company's are already in pretty rough shape with everyone wanting to merge... gee..  maybe if your trucks didn't cost what a house does you would move more volume... lol.   Go under for all I care at this point... and let the junk rot on the lot.  Be a cold day in hell before I would pay 76k for some shitty GMC half ton.

 

Some kid posted he paid 43k otd for a 19 Trailboss custom double cab.... cool... you paid 43k for a rubber mat zero option not even a storage compartment in the jumpseat w/t with duratracs, dual exhaust a leveling kit and red tow hooks... In the end of 2015 I paid 46k otd for a loaded double cab LTZ with a 6.2... so yeah nav heated and cooled seats, heated wheel, Bose, and blah blah... In 3.5 years you are accepting a truck that should be 30 grand at most for 43 grand... right.

Not sure how it is up there, but here in California it's not just trucks either. Went to Panera for lunch with my Dad today, $27 for the 2 of us. Went to the movies this weekend and paid $17, for one child's admission to a matinee. Don't even get me started on my wife's Starbucks tab. 

 

And folks thought they'd be living large with their higher minimum wage. 

 

My 2019 LT was only about a thousand more otd than my 2017 LT, but missing a very long list of little things that used to be included at that trim and price.

Thanks! It’s just so hard to know. I like this thread, I think it’s a great reference. It helps people know what can be done. 

 

I know a guy who paid full sticker on his Ford truck because he said “haggling is a fallacy”. I gave him a ride to the dealer and when we were sitting there the salesman said “ok, so the truck is $xxxxx” (sticker price) and my friend goes “ok. I’ll take it”. 

The salesman looked over at me like “ummm?” I just shook my head, shrugged my shoulders and told him I’m just his ride here, it’s his jam. My friend happily drove out of there with a full priced Ford (that turned out to be a complete lemon). I actually felt pretty bad for him.
