Stan, aren't you concerned that you may leave the fill plug out? Not get the filter tight or use, oh I don't know...ATF or gear oil in the motor due to the frequency of service?

True story. I worked with this guy in Texas (Yes, El Paso is part of Texas, not Mexico) who bought a brand new 1972 Monte Carlo with a 350 and TH400. It's like 1989 and a nice spring day. No one is in a hurry to leave the parking lot so we're scoping out each others rides. This fella opens the hood on this heap and right away I notice is has the really short GM break in filter on it so I asked him where he got one. 
 
"Oh, that's the original", he deadpans. YIKES!!
 
"You know your suppose to change the filter with the oil, right!" I laugh. 
 
"I will if I ever get around to changing oil" he quips. Car has 285,000 miles on it. "Has used a quart in 500 or so since new so it never really gets dirty". Used bulk recycle oil from day one for make up. Stuff dark when it goes in.  It looked to me that it leaked more than it ever burned and it never smoked. Trans fluid had never been serviced nor the differential. He was still driving it a year later when I left the area. What do ya do with a story like that? :lurk:
 
 

I had an uncle like that, his vehicles lasted awhile but not that long. Of course this was in New Jersey growing up in the 60s rust usually was the killer.

if an engine is allowed to go a very long time with no oil changes, oil is just added as needed and sludge and grudge builds up in the engine.  Then, if an oil and filter change is performed and current high detergent oil with all the cleaners one should expect the engine to fail in fairly short order as all the crude will clog up oil passages to main bearings, cam shaft, etc, etc.  But, engines such as this are rare these days as they won’t pass annual emissions tests.

I had a 70 Ford p/u in 1973, my first. Not to long after I got it I put in a 289 out a ford station wagon. Back in those days you still had non detergent oil. Working in the construction industry for my dad I got my oil free. It was high detergent oil. For two years straight like clockwork my oil pickup screen would clog and sheer the shaft to the distributor. I pulled one valve cover once what a mess. I put 50-60K miles on that engine. That truck got back over by a D6 crushed the bed. The engine ended up in a 66 ford p/u. The front clip ended up on my uncles 70 model p/u he had just hit a deer. Oh ship, it just dawned on me conspiracy, they all work for my father. Maybe backing over my truck was planed. That got two other trucks going. That sludge up engine do run along time.

Lol, too funny!  You’ve got yourself the makings of a good Country Western song.  Just need to work in a train, Grandma and a dog ?!  But, I do remember those days when there was vigorous debate over the merits of detergent vs non-detergent oil.  Sort of like the back and forth on this thread.  Although, must admit I’ve kinda lost track of what the original topic was.  But, regardless, it’s been fun ?...

I was the bosses son. They pulled stuff on me all the time. They thought I was rich like him. Truth be known I was a low paid just married grease monkey starting at the bottom. For my own good, he said. I got one more good one. My uncle gave my a 64 ss Impala that was broken, and had frame rust. I got it running and used it as a job site car. It was good for that and kept me from having to wash my new car daily at night before school. Got to look good for school and the ladies. This was just before I met my future wife. I show up for work no Impala. My uncle buried it under a parking lot that was getting readied to be paved. Never told me what I did to piss him off. That was my normal live for awhile. I'll have to tell the story about the trackhoe, VW and a lake being dug some day.

My car (specified in the manual)

500 miles

Add magnetic drain plug (not in the manual)

1500 miles

Then most likely once a year

 

My 2010 I did 750, added a magnetic plug then every 3-4K miles since.  Have also run oil analysis.  

 

New truck I plan to do the same.  It has worked out well.  Oil changes are cheap insurance

Speaking of oil analysis...

 

On my 02 Silverado I had an analysis done a couple years ago. 

Had 1800 miles on fully synthetic Mobil 1 that had been in there for 15 months.

Analysis came back and basically said to never do that again.

They suggested taking a sample at 1200 miles or 9 months and see what it looks like. 

I do a lot of short trips, so I see why I need to do it earlier.

 

My wifes little 4 cylinder had same Mobil 1 oil with about 6,000 miles in 8 months. She didnt do highway, but drove about 22 miles 1 way, so engine always reached operating temps. They said it looked fine, go 9,000 miles or 1 year and test again 

 

One of my motorcycles had V-twin Mobil 1 with 1400 miles and was 18 months old. I usually only rode that thing on the highway, they said oil looked brand new and to test again at 2,500 miles or at 24 months next time. 

 

So my take on all that was how you drive it GREATLY affects your oil change interval.

With my 2018, we tend to take it out on the weekends alot more often than we took my 02, so it sees some highway and has plenty of time to warm up on any weekend drives. I plan on changing its oil with Mobil 1 every 8 or 9 months regardless of mileage (Unless I do a long trip)
