Can Lane Keep be adjusted?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2017 GMC Denali pickup and it has the Lane Keep Assist on it and I really like that. The problem is that it won’t assist until the tires are on the center line or slightly over the center line. The assist works much better when the tires are close to the right edge and will turn the steering wheel when the tires are around one or two feet from the line. I would like it to do the same distance from the center line. Is there a way to adjust the camera?

Has anyone Hit the long desolate road at 85 and seen what happens when you let the lane departure take over? Heads up display big yellow light nasty voice tells me to re engage the wheel. Happens about the 3rd time it assist with lane departure. Lol GMC's attorneys have thought of everything!

To my knowledge the only adjustment would be through a software update.  The amount of assist is regulated by how the software interprets the camera image along with a myriad of other variables.

My wife has a 2017 Honda Pilot my twins have a 2017 Honda Accord and my oldest daughter has a 2017 Honda CR-V. All have the lane keep feature and it works amazingly! Their cars will literally drive themselves between lane keep and the adaptive cruise control. They will maintain distance slowing and accelerating when needed and diligently stay in their lane. No wondering or crossing the lines not even on turns on the highway.  The lane keep in my 2018 Sierra is a joke compared the the Honda’s.

Thanks for the reply. Have you ever felt your automatic brake assist do anything?
The only thing I have experienced was a red flashing light in the heads up display and a seat vibration. There has never been a brake apply in my experience.

I only have 1200 miles on mine - and over a 1/3 of that was the drive home from the dealer, but I've also never had any brake assistance on mine either.  I've seen the red flashing light / seat vibration 3 times - twice for no good reason and once where I was paying attention but it made sense.

I also agree with the OP on the Lane Assistance.

Thanks Nitro, I think I will get the GM Dealer to look into this on my next oil change. I too had the red flashing light and seat vibration when a car in front of me turned off and I passed close to him, but no breaks applied that I could tell. I want that function to work since I may need it some day and I paid for it.

I took a quick look a the owner's manual.  The Forward Automatic Braking and Intelligent Brake Assist works between 5MPH and 50MPH and detects vehicles up to 60 meters (197ft).

Before checking with the dealer, make sure the system is turning on.  Manual says there is a setting for off, Alert, Alert and Brake.  Obviously make sure it is set to Alert and Brake.  I'll have to check today to see what mine is set to.

From the Manual:

Forward Collision System This feature will turn on or off Forward Collision Alert (FCA) and Forward Automatic Braking (FAB). The Off setting disables all FCA and FAB functions. With the Alert and Brake setting, both FCA and FAB are available. The Alert setting disables FAB. See Forward Automatic Braking (FAB) page 294. Select Off, Alert and Brake, or Alert

Forward Automatic Braking (FAB) If the vehicle has Forward Collision Alert (FCA), it also has FAB, which includes Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA). When the system detects a vehicle ahead in your path that is traveling in the same direction that you may be about to crash into, it can provide a boost to braking or automatically brake the vehicle. This can help avoid or lessen the severity of crashes when driving in a forward gear. Depending on the situation, the vehicle may automatically brake moderately or hard. This forward automatic braking can only occur if a vehicle is detected. This is shown by the FCA vehicle ahead indicator being lit. See Forward Collision Alert (FCA) System 0 292. The system works when driving in a forward gear between 8 km/h (5 mph) and 80 km/h (50 mph). It can detect vehicles up to approximately 60 m (197 ft).

Warning FAB is an emergency crash preparation feature and is not designed to avoid crashes. Do not rely on FAB to brake the vehicle. FAB will not brake outside of its operating speed range and only responds to detected vehicles. FAB may not: . Detect a vehicle ahead on winding or hilly roads. . Detect all vehicles, especially vehicles with a trailer, tractors, muddy vehicles, etc. . Detect a vehicle when weather limits visibility, such as in fog, rain, or snow. . Detect a vehicle ahead if it is partially blocked by pedestrians or other objects.  Complete attention is always required while driving, and you should be ready to take action and apply the brakes and/or steer the vehicle to avoid crashes.

Warning FAB may automatically brake the vehicle suddenly in situations where it is unexpected and undesired. It could respond to a turning vehicle ahead, guardrails, signs, and other non-moving objects. To override FAB, firmly press the accelerator pedal, if it is safe to do so.

Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) IBA may activate when the brake pedal is applied quickly by providing a boost to braking based on the speed of approach and distance to a vehicle ahead. Minor brake pedal pulsations or pedal movement during this time is normal and the brake pedal should continue to be applied as needed. IBA will automatically disengage only when the brake pedal is released.

Warning IBA may increase vehicle braking in situations when it may not be necessary. You could block the flow of traffic. If this occurs, take your foot off the brake pedal and then apply the brakes as needed.

FAB and IBA can be disabled through vehicle personalization. See “Collision/Detection Systems” under Vehicle Personalization page 165.

Warning Using FAB or IBA while towing a trailer could cause you to lose control of the vehicle and crash. Turn the system to Alert or Off when towing a trailer.

Thanks DH, I looked at my settings and it may have been on Alert. It has off, alert, and alert with braking, and before I paid attention I pressed off because I thought it would turn to “on” but it doesn’t. I pressed alert with braking and will see what happens the next time I drive it.

Why are you thanking DH?

Well the trip to the dealership didn't yield any results. They started with they have never had this issue with the FAB or Adaptive braking. The service writer told me to make an appointment and bring the truck in. They will diagnose it, should not be more than a day it they find something. Really got a warm fuzzy feeling. [emoji58]
