Cooper ATP vs. Falken A/T3W

Recommended Posts

I just put the Falken wildpeak A/T3w's on my new 2018 GMC Sierra 1500. I had them put on before I closed the deal on the truck, went with the stock size in an XL. Per Falken they are 48lbs. I have had no ride issues or out of balance problems. By looking at them 1 required a fair bit of weight to balance. I only have about 250 miles on them so far so I've only driven in dry and a little rain. Traction has been great in both, which is good since I have the 6.2.

I will second what @Move Over said on an LT tire. If you are not hauling heavy loads on a daily bases or driving in severe off road conditions LT's are Overkill. I had a set of Yokohama geolandar ATS G015 in 275 60r20 LT on my 15 Sierra and they changed the ride greatly. They were a great tire, but I really missed the ride quality I had before I put them on.

Coopers, I ran them on my old 08 Silverado and was very happy with them. Also ran their touring CS4 and CS5 on 2 cars. I was considering the new Cooper Discoverer A/T3 4S, but chose the Falken's based on price and overall looks. IMG_20181118_144039.thumb.jpg.5d4f5bc02a5bfcc562637e03c1bf9135.jpg

Looks great. For the price, look and performance i don’t think the falken can be beat.

I think the common misconception about LT tires around these forums is that they will hold more weight at any given pressure. Which, is not the case. If you look at load inflation tables, a typical 275/60/20 LT will hold about 3600 lbs when fully inflated at 80 PSI. Which most trucks (1500’s) won’t even get near or they’d be riding like a buckboard on a diving board.

LT tires on a 1500 need to be inflated to around 50psi (refer to a ram rebel that come with an LT tire stock) but at that PSI an LT tire actually carries less weight than a properly inflated XL rated tire.

Funny how internet engineers spew out information. I’m no tire expert but people should definitely do their due diligence before throwing an LT tire on a 1500.

On my second set of Cooper AT3s. First set is still on my Dad's 2012 Tahoe. No issues and good wear. Snow traction is just fine.  Only fault is the channels are just the right size for the pea gravel they put down.  Just hate seeing it in the grooves ;)

I will say though the LT tires do have a deeper tread depth. However with a 55000 mile tread wear warranty the P rate XL will be fine for me.

The Cooper AT3 4S flavor has a 65k mile warranty.

Definitely some do. Terra grapplers were crazy different. The LT vs XL depth in the AT3W’s is 1 or 2mm different. Mine have about 5k on them now and look new. Wearing wonderfully

The price of the falken is VERY attractive to me...  there's a thread over on a toyota 4 runner forum that has 72 pages with guys putting that tire through hell and back and it seems to perform very well for a P rated XL tire.  I dont do any offroading but do drive through some mu and definitely alot of snow up here in wisconsin.
