Westers & HPIII

Recommended Posts

Received and installed the Westers pcm. Prior to taking out the stock pcm I used the HPIII to take it back to stock program. I saw in another post that the dealer supposedly can not tell that you swapped pcm's. My question is two fold, first if I were to use the HPIII now would it recognize the Westers pcm as stock and allow me to program or would it default out due to the wrong version number? Secondly, if the HPIII were to allow me to program for differing tire sizes on the Westers pcm (I run 285's on Weld Stonecrushers in summer and 265's on PYO in winter) does it simply edit the existing program or would it do a complete rewrite thereby wiping out the Westers programming? I have e-mailed Hypertech twice now with no reply. They have been pretty responsive with questions I have had in the past.

My goal here is to simply use the HPIII to adjust for tire size only without affecting the Westers programming.

I suppose the other work around would be to run the HPIII in winter w the 265's by swapping the stock pcm back in. I would appreciate any ideas, feedback, etc..

I asked Lyndon before finalizing my purchase and he wasn't sure whether the HPIII would overwrite the whole program when changing for tire size. He did admit that this was the one draw back to his pcm and suggested calling Hypertech. He did say that if I messed it up he would replace it but I hate to experiment here if someone knows how these things work.

That's a tough question... I don't know how the Hypertech works, but I would venture a guess that you could go in and run just the tire program, without affecting the rest of the Westers programming.

You could try it, and see how it works, and if it is a problem then Lyndon will send you a new PCM.

If you are concerned about it, then I would have Lyndon send you a PCM calibrated for 265's and then just watch your speed in the summer... that way you are recording less miles on your truck during the summer months when you are running the 285's.

I spoke with tech support at Hypertech today. They confirmed that even if the HPIII recognized the Westers pcm as stock that it would overwrite the custom tuning even if the only thing I changed was for tire size. This wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear but at least now I know not to use the programmer on the new pcm.

Wholly CRAP!!!

$632 for my '02. I feel sorry for you '03 guys! :chevy:

I also don't wish to give him my good factory unit as a core, so I imagine in that case the price goes up even more!!

I'll have to scour the warranty cage.

I think you were looking at the Canadian price list. The cost for a 2001 thru 2002 is $495.00. Still no small chunk of change but better!

If you do keep the core there is a core charge but the amount depends on model year.

I have an 03 and I am saving the $595.00 for mine!
