MPG

Recommended Posts

Just got my 2019 Silverado Trail Boss, absolutely love the truck, it's a pleasure to drive. These trucks are supposed to be 450 pds lighter than the previous trucks , they have a new furl management system that actually works very well you don't notice it when it works. You do have the option to turn

to turn it off. The truck has the same 5,3 L engine but the MPG is less than my 2014 truck. I guess my question is how come the mileage is less with all this less weight n better fuel management . I just put 500 miles on it all highway driving and the average fuel mileage was 18

It may have to do with the lift.  Was your last truck lifted?  The Trailboss does not get the same mpg as a non-lifted Silverado.

tires, lift, speed, wind conditions, winter gas blend

many things affect mileage. Give it a while longer to compare fully. You said it was all highway miles, at what speed? over 70 mph the mileage drops like a rock.

Break-in, stock 33" tires, gearing, drag, winter gas, colder/more dense air, increased resistance from cold oils/fluids etc.

Reasonably i would not expect more than a .25mpg improvement over a similar equipped K2. I used to do a 4 hour run with my old 4 speed 1998 5.7L 350 DCSB and would burn about 45L (11.8 usgal), My 2010 5.3L 6spd and AFM did roughly the same on 33" tires. My 2015 6.2L in the same trim with fuel management and 8 speed trans burns closer to 50L of Premium (13.2 usgal). Mind you i am making almost 200hp more than my 98 and am running larger 33" 10ply tires. My point is that fuel economy has not come a long way in reality, so in my opinion it is unreasonable to expect changes of 2 or 3 mpg out of such minor changes. You may see slightly better results in the V6 and V4 department, but most likely not in Trail Boss trim.

The Trail Boss does have a 2" lift n the bigger tires and I understand that does factor in the mpg's

fuel mileage n yes the average speed was over 70. If anything you would think at least the mileage would be the same as my 2014 with the weight loss and fuel management n the 8 speed tranny

What was the average MPG on your '14?

The K2's range anywhere from 15-16mpg to 18-19mpg average depending on driving habits, engine and ratio.

My 14 got an average of 23 mpg on the highway

your weight loss and transmission make less effect travelling at constant highway speeds. Those changes do more for city driving.

At 70+ you are fighting air resistance more than anything. your lift and tires hurt a lot in that instance. Remember the posted highway mileage on the window sticker is based on tests at 55mph. I'm sure you would have better mileage at lower speeds, and in town this truck should be pretty comparable if not better than your old one.

100% true. The highest speed limit in my neck of the woods is 55mph. My truck does good if you're around town and your average speed is around 40mph, i get readings as low as 11L/100km (21.4 us mpg) with the best ever being 9.9L/100km (23.75 us mpg) for the trucks first 500km, not lifted and on stock tires. As soon as i go on a highway drive, i drive around 67mph in the 55 zones with a few full throttle passes, my mileage takes a dump. I run around 12.8 to 13.5L/100 (18.4 and 17.4us mpg). When working the math by hand, actual fuel economy is usually 1mpg worse than the DIC states, in my experience anyway.

I find it hilarious when people claim their lifted 6.2L with bolt-ons and a tune on 35" tires gets 25mpg.

If your 2019 is getting a hand calculated 18mpg on 33" tires while frequently seeing speeds North of 70mph, i would say that is pretty impressive, i know my truck wouldnt get that. Are your tires a D load or an E load?

The 2019 mpg ratings are lower or the same as the 2014-18 trucks depending on engine gear ratio.  This has been one of the main criticisms other than interior from the media.  GM says even though they are lighter trucks the size is larger and has to push more air out of the way.  I think GM really screwed up big especially toting the weight reduction and all the tech they put into the new engine cylinder deactivation but they have no improvements to show for it.  HP/TQ is same and MPG same or less.  GM trucks were always lower ride height than the competition and and now the 2019 GM trucks are now the same ride height as Ford, Ram, Nissan and Toyota but have less MPG than Ram and Ford.
