Comercial 1500 Silverado 16,700 lbs tow capacity

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to trade in my 14 silverado 1500 for something thats rated to pull more weight. I notice on Chevrolet's website that the commercial silverado 1500 w/ 3.73 rear axle ratio has a 15000/16700lbs w max trailering package rating. Every dealership I've called doesn't know what I am talking about so can someone verify for me that this configuration of the Silverado exists?!

Are you sure it was a 1500 you were looking at? I think my 6.0L 2500's "towing capacity" is around 16,000#

As far as I know GM has discontinued the HD version of the 1500, even if they had it the frame would not allow the payload rating that would enable you to have a trailer weight that heavy. If the regular Max Tow is not enough at a 12,000lb tow rating and 2,200lb payload, you need to be looking at a 2500.

https://www.chevrolet.com/previous-year/silverado-1500-pickup-truck/build-and-price/features/capabilities/?section=Powertrain&section=Trailering %26 Payload&styleOne=391728&engineOne=L83&bodyTypeOne=4&driveTypeOne=4WD

16,700lbs is the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating).  That is NOT the towing capacity.  I do see where it says max conventional towing, but that is a big typo on GM as those numbers are GCWR ratings, not trailer towing capacity ratings.

If you look on the front page of the Silverado 1500 commercial section, they publish the max towing rating as 12,500lbs https://www.chevrolet.com/commercial/silverado-1500-work-truck

Highest towing capacity is 12,500lbs on a double cab 2WD 6.2.  https://www.gmfleetorderguide.com/NASApp/domestic/proddesc.jsp?year=2018&regionID=1&divisionID=1&type=0&vehicleID=20987&section=trailer_specs&page=&butID=8

If you want to tow over 12,500, gotta go HD.

14,300lbs if you are 2WD, 13,900lbs if you are 4WD for a CCLB.

Yeah must be something screwy on there because no matter what you spec a half ton with, it will not exceed the payload of a 2500. I have a 2500 and I know how you feel, it would be ten times nicer to deal with a half-ton on a daily basis but I think your requirements will put you in a 2500. Big, bulky, bad on fuel, gut-less, but overall very capable trucks.
