2in Rear Drop Shackles

Recommended Posts

Has any one on here done a 2in rear drop shackle kit to their ‘16+ Silverado 2500 2wd? If so how bad was the install process and are you glad you did it versus lifting the front end? Looking for a more level look but don’t know that I necessarily want to make the wheel well space in the front bigger. I feel like I’d rather lower the back. I feel these trucks are tall enough and I don’t have a 4wd so I don’t want to jack it up higher for no real reason.

Looks good man. Would you happen to have a picture of it without the trailer? Did the ride quality get better/worse/no change? Did you have to drop your trailer hitch and bend/cut the bed seam or loosen the bed and lift it a little?

I tried them out on my 2015.
I also removed the big overload springs.
I liked the look and how easy it was to get in the back of the truck.
Ride was the same as stock. I didn't put anything really heavy in my truck or pull a heavy trailer at the time. (7k car trailer is all I towed with it like this.)
You have to modify the bed floor slightly for this to work.
There is a pinch weld seam you will need to fold over for clearance. No big deal. Just hit it with some paint and then some undercoating after you are done folding it over so it will not rust.

In the end I removed the drop shackles and lifted the front.
I needed to tow something a little heavier, so the overloads needed to go back in. And I wanted to add air bags to keep it from squatting. This meant it needed to be at stock height in the rear for them to work correctly do to there internal bump stops. So lifting the front was my only option to get it level again.

I still have the shackles if you are interested in them. They were on my truck for like 4k miles maybe? Just did not work for me.

I did the 2" drop shackles on my 2015 2500 shortly after I bought it.  I also put on a set of 1500# rated SumoSprings in place of the OEM bump stops. I can throw over a ton of material in the back end and it just reaches being level front to rear.   4 years and it is one of the best things I did to the pickup.  That "cat in heat" look of the stock 3/4 ton was goofy and made getting in and out of the bed more difficult.

Did it make any change in the ride quality? If so better or worse? How often do you hit the Sumo Springs or bump stops? What kit did you use? Part numbers? Did it have to be realigned? Did you do the install yourself? Do you have any pics? Any extra help/answers would be greatly appreciated.

It looks great! And if I didn’t worry so much I would take the shackles off your hand. But since I do, when I do it to mine I will probably just buy all new parts. I figure I will keep the overload springs in, don’t need them often but when I do....

Actually, inflating tires to no more than 55 all the way around when empty does more for ride quality than anything else.  Other than that, ride remained the same with back lowered..  With the 2" drop shackles installed, the SumoSprings are in contact with the drive axle all the time.  They are progressive in resistance, made out of polymer foam type of material that is very similar in function as an air bag setup.  As more load is placed on the back, the more resistance the Sumo's offer.  About the time the pickup is getting close to level under a heavy load (over 2000#), the Sumo's are providing full 1500# additional support.   They really help on cornering under a load.  Under a load, the Sumo's make the ride feel as smooth as air bags.  And by resting on the axle all the time, there is no jarring contact going on like with Timbrens and such.

There was no need to realign.  Nothing was done to the front. I didn't install the shackles.  I had a shop near me do it when I had them replace the stupid OEM trash can muffler with a Magnflow while they had it up on the lift.   I did to the Sumo's myself.  That was a simple 15 minute job.  Just pry out the factory bump stops with a screwdriver and pop the Sumo's in their place.  I did raise the back and remove tires to make that job go quickly.    I would take pictures but my pickup is a mess and you wouldn't be able to tell much.  One of the disadvantages of living on rural gravel roads when it rains or melting snow. Everything turns into a mud bog.

I'm looking for a set of drop shackles for my 2015 2500hd.  I'd be interested if you still have them.
