Grumpy,

I think if anyone has the answer to this question it would be you.

My question,

On average how much does transmission fluid expand when it gets warm. I ask because the new transmissions without a dip stick are checked at a specified temperature to allow for expansion I believe. Remove level plug and fluid drips or slow flow at specified temperature.

Just curious.

Of course is depends some on system volume and shapes but if you pull the stick on say a 15 6L80E or older 4L60 you will see to marks labeled 'cold' and 'hot'. It's quite a bit different. At the end of this members really good video he explains the level check on stick-less systems. Level and within the temperature required is key.

Confused.

I know about checking the fluid level on a trans without a dip stick. I have done it. I was looking for a number for average expansion of trans fluid. 1% 2% etc. Thought you might know.

Ops my bad. Misunderstood. It is knowable but I'll have to look it up.

Note, the difference between the hot and cold marks isn't solely due to fluid expansion.  At least for my 4l80e, GM has a process for shifting through all the gears after warming up the fluid to distribute the fluid throughout the transmission, whereas the cold mark is just to make sure there's enough fluid in the transmission to function so it can be warmed up to do the fluid level check with the hot mark.

1652 miles OCI

0 ounces of make up oil.

I'm calling this one a  quart in 20K ++

This would be better than the engineering standard for this fuel/mile distance of 2.5 to 4 ounces or 0.03% to 0.05% of the fuel used over this OCI.

Just curious but why add make up oil if you are going to change it out real soon?

Great question:

To quantify the usage.

If I can measure it...I can graph it....

If I can graph it I can fix it....IF it's fixable.

 :)

It gives me eyes, statistically, into what is going on and how my changes are affecting the situation. Even if I fail at a fix, it keeps me from making the same mistake twice.

😉

Oil companies spent allot of money on my education in stat's and process control and I saved and made them millions working this system. Time for me to benefit from that training, eh?

2014 Cruze diesel
102,710 total miles
5,031 miles on AMSOIL DP530 5w-30 diesel oil
OLM was at 35%
Wix XL10010 filter. AMSOIL doesn't make a filter for this, wish they would.
Sent sample off to Dyson analysis. Wanting to see how this new oil from AMSOIL performs.

I'd love to see the TAN and TBN numbers 😉

Forgot to post this one earlier.   TBN is 4.27 and TAN 2.87 on this report.

9/24/2021
2012 Chevy Cruze 1.4 turbo
87,326 total miles on Cruze
6,194 miles on ASL SS 5w-30
OLM at 5%
Wix Oil filter, I got started and dumped the oil before I checked to see if I had an AMSOIL oil filter and of course I didn't. :frustration:
Sent sample off to Oil Analyzers.

At least you put the plug in before you filled it :)

The TBN/TAN numbers in this post are for the diesel in the last post, correct?
