Crew cab vs double cab

Well, this topic is relevant to me.

I’m also eying the deals on 2018 double cabs.

I currently looking to replace a 2008 Canyon extended cab, as a result of spending quite a bit of money on repairs lately.

The Canyon’s size has been working well for myself, my wife, and our two dogs. We are definitely at the comfortable limit of the truck’s space when we head out for a camping trip. We sometimes fill the 6ft bed, and the Standard Poodle does not have that much room, but nobody is unhappy.

I’ve never loved the look of the sub 6ft beds, but cost is the bigger factor for me right now. I’m looking for a low trim V8 4x4. Basically, the cost of a new crew cab could be a problem.

Compared to my Canyon, the Sierra DC has tons of room.

My wife and I are not currently planing on having kids within the next 5 years, but there is a good chance I would try to keep the truck for around 10 years, so child seats could be a factor within the truck’s time with me.

I think being able to fit one seat in the middle could be sufficient “future proofing.” I mean, who buys a new minivan, 5 years before they even plan on having kids?

Sometimes life does not go according to plan, that I know. Heck, I was planing to keep my Canyon another few years, but it’s currently sitting at the dealer awaiting a new differential, which will cause me to miss at least a day of work. This is after already spending thousands in repairs over the last 12 months.

Anyway, that’s enough rambling for now.

I have owned both as well.  I don't need an SUV, nor worry about passengers.  So the double cab is the perfect fit and it is nice having the shorter truck that still has a 6.5' box.  I used to buy crews especially because the gmt800 extended cabs were such rattle traps but now with a pillar and doors the point is moot.  I can still fit all the equipment I want in the cab of the truck in a double cabs back with the seats up so it's perfect.  If your primary thing is hauling friends and family around... buy the bigger cab!

My 2015 is a double cab.  I honestly can't stand crew cabs for anything other than 3/4 ton and up trucks that haul people AND equipment.  That's just me though.  I love my truck.  I was able to fit a rear facing car seat, my wife, my 8 year old, my German Shepard, and my Min Pin all comfortably inside over a road trip from San Diego to Mississippi and back.  I really only have 3 issues with my double cab: 1. I got a double cab because I hate the look of crew cabs.  I prefer the smooth side of the older Ext cab Chevy's but I guess that went out the window with this model. 2. It's damn near impossible to find custom made subwoofer boxes that fit behind the rear seat(maybe because there's absolutely no room?).  3. This one is trivial but all of the car washes I went to charged an additional fee for crew cab trucks.  My truck is only an extended cab but to someone that doesn't know any better, they'd think it was a crew cab. I'd have to choose whether I wanted to argue it and risk getting a crappy wash or just let it slide.
