Replacing 2.0 HMI module with 2.5 HMI module to add CarPlay/Android Auto to 2014-2015 Silverado

Question for everyone but first a little back ground. I've been having issues lately in my 2014 Silverado, IO5, non-Bose. Basically the infotainment system locks up constantly. When it does, you can't change volume, can't change stations/sources, and can't even turn it off. Sometimes it lasts a few seconds, sometimes up to an hour. At any rate, I've taken it in multiple times and only recently did the dealer give me any sort of answer. They chalked it up to a faulty HMI. So I replaced the HMI, guess what, the problem remains. Now they're telling me that it's actually the amplifier in the radio module and quoted me $1100 to replace it. Obviously I noped right out of there. I did some digging and found a replacement part for the amplifier in the radio module (a $5 part), replaced that chip and the problem is still there. So my question is does this sound like an issue that would be remedied by replacing the radio module? If so i'm leaning towards upgrading to the 2.5 HMI because why not at this point. From what I've been able to glean from this thread is that I'll need to replace the radio module + the HMI + the usb port. Am I on the right track here?

Correct bro, I have a 2014 and I’m actually glad I did way better then then 2.0hmi I would go ahead and add navigation i usually use it when I go on long trips but use carplay on google maps For closer places

Does that sound like a reasonable fix for my problem? At this point I'm a little hesitant to throw more money at this if it isn't going to fix my problem.

Drop us a line from our site we can go over everything don’t want to see you parts cannon this and not fix it :)

Ok so reading about a lot of ways to do this car play add but I'm trying to do it on a 2015 but without having to remove my radio module. Things like the HMI and USBs are easy but I don't feel comfortable taking apart the screen location. My truck also does have SMS, phone and nav but I can't get carplay, would be great to have but not trying to go over 400$. If I do get an HMI and USB port can I just have my radio module updated manually or does a dealer have to.

Honestly the radio is almost easier than the HMI the screen is just clipped in place pop a corner and work your way around its cake. Price wise shouldn't be an issue if you take your time and source the proper parts most of our customers that supply their own hardware are out the door well under $450 but get the radio and do it right so that car play operates correctly. Its kind of useless without it ?

Thanks, brother, I'll see what I will do planning on doing it in the future. I think it will be a great help especially to my father who drives the truck. Also don't want to bother you with links so need on sending them over, have a good one .

I only did the HMI and USB at first. Siri and phone calls won’t work. I eventually bought the radio and a trim panel removal kit and it was real easy to swap out. Heck I thought it was much easier than swapping the HMI or USB.

Some 2015.5's radios can be upgraded to the new firmware but anything below requires an HMI, radio module and USB for proper functionality. If you want voice commands you'll want a cluster flash or upgrade as well. We provide a kit including all 3 modules for the carplay/Android auto retrofit. Plug n play.

Is there a way to tell if a 2015.5 only needs updated firmware other than removing glovebox and looking at HMI?

Nope - you usually have to pull the module. Some had part number 23402909 (Made in 2015 but upgrade-able to 2016 FW). There's no RPO that determines which part # you ended up with.

Also - this just matters for the radio module. The HMI and USB will always need to be upgraded and only a select few vehicles will be able to have their existing radios updated.
