2004.5 Duramax

Recommended Posts

I am currently about ready to buy an 04 D/A CC SB. However, I have heard that Dmax will be updated by Jan. 1st. I guess all new diesels have to be updated and most manufacturers are pushing the update back until the deadline....01/01/04. The general thought is that the new Dmax will be better, with Ford-besting numbers, VGT which will improve low-end grunt, and so forth. However, the Dodge boys are scared silly over the EGR which will be added to both the new Dmax and the new Cummins. My question is, will the 04.5 Dmax be an improvement or a hurt?? Should I put off my purchase to wait for an 04.5?? I really want my truck now, but I would rather wait a few months than be dissapointed for a few years. Any help on this would be appreciated.

The following quote from the latest (August) GM Techlink gives a hint about the 04 Dmax changes...

"The interim 2004 Duramax 6600 diesel engine (RPO LLY) becomes available January 2004. Though similar to the current production Duramax 6600, this engine offers some significant differences. The GM Service Technical College (STC) will offer an updated Diesel Engine Performance course to reflect the changes. Refreshed and updated CBT, IDL, and Hands-on course components will be released successively beginning April 2004..."

The "rumored" changes include a redesigned head for easier injector R&R. If the Dmax's ordered in Jan 04 include these changes It may be worth waiting for... :wtf:
