NEWBIE- 4WD Lowering

Recommended Posts

:wtf: I have a 97 GMC Yukon 4wd with Hotchkis swaybars and want to lower the the truck somewhat. It has HRE 20*10's with 305/45 Pirellis. Does anyone have any experience with that Belltech kit?? How does it affect the ride and handling???

Stylin Concepts

Personaly I don't worry about ride or comfort when I think of dropping a truck. I guess thats just me, but to me it does not matter. So I can't answer that one for you. It will handle better as with any vehicle that you lower the center of gravity on.

Belltech makes good stuff. Probably in the top two for your truck.

4WD? Ummm...................................why do you want to lower a 4wd? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a 4WD in the first place?

No offense, just my $.02 though.

:smash: The same can be said for lifting a truck, too.

Not this discussion again...

same response as always..

some ppl don't use their 4wd's for offroading so it does not defeat the purpose of a 4wd on the street because it is still useable during winters and will give a better look and better ride around corners... ppl in cities don't need a lifted 4wd for everyday use and some don't want to use it at all except for winter when it provides an almost awd look lowered and still driving during harsh conditions

Why not? GM did it: Silverado SS.

Actually I don't understand lifting or lowering more than a couple inches either way, but I've noticed some people like going to either extreme so whatever floats their boat!

From my research, I've discovered that you can savely lower your Yukon 1"-3" without any problems. I have a friend who works at the Arlington plant who helped me out with figuring how much drop I could get. I had another friend who knew of a way to pay for the drop with LABOR ONLY without any parts to buy. Remove one of the rear leafs (we removed the 2nd from the top) and crank the torsion on the front to match or go lower if you like. The driver's side may be a pain since where the bolt for the spring is right next to the gas tank which runs along the frame on the left rear door. Removing the bolt can be done without removing the tank, but it takes a great deal of patience.

The ride is pretty good on my Escalade, but be sure to trim your bump stops. You can also add helper springs (air bags) on the leafs if you find yourself bottoming out more than you'd like. Still haven't gotten pics small enough to post yet...

Hope this helps.

I lowered my 4x4 with the Belltech kit. I would not remove springs from the leaf packs, the rear will become a bit sloppy. It rides great, even better than stock with the polyurethane sway bar bushings. I heard Doetsch Tech shocks are good, but I have the Nitro Drops from Belltech and they seem ok. go to the suspension page on my site to view installation...
