How to Identify Rear Axle 2008 Silverado 2500 HD 6.0

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been searching but haven't found a simple way to look this up.  I have a 2008 Silverado 2500 HD 6.0 Gas, extended cab, 8 foot bed, I am reasonably sure its a 3.73 axle ratio and it has the towing package.  The truck has almost 180k on it and the rear diff cover is leaking (seeping through).  What I want to get is:

Has one on my old truck, its a nice piece.  However I see that they only make it for a 9.5" ring gear.  I see that my truck could be 9.5, 10.5, or 11.5.  How do I go about identifying it?

Looks like ya got a pretty good leak there. How often are you adding fluid?

That leak actually just started about a week ago, I've barely driven the truck since then so I haven't added any fluid.  Very likely it will be sitting until a new cover and fluid can be procured.

I had a rig once that I had to add fluid daily. I hated doing it, but my auto shop teacher let me use the shop supplies for free - so I might as well.  It was the front diff, on a 1978 K-5 Blazer 4x4. It was a front wheel drive vehicle with shift on the fly 4x4, so there were not many options. I blew the seal out by jumping the truck about 15 feet in the air on a rage bender. Long story, but the person I was pissed at tracked me down the next day and said "I gotta teel ya, that was the most awesome truck jump that I have ever seen", and then he apologized for his actions, and offered a handshake as an olive branch type of truce.

So I found a good compromise.  There are a couple other Girdled covers out there but, for example, if I went with the B&M after gasket and all I'm into it for like $230 which is more than I want to spend.  Instead I ordered this:

Its different from the picture according to reviews it has a fill hole and even a temp gauge hole.  Holds some extra fluid which is nice but doesn't have the girdles which are kinda overkill anyway.

Fluid recommendation?  Last time I did a diff it was on my Camaro, and I used Mobil 1 which didn't need a friction modifier.

Looks like a 10.5  to me.  10'5's have a removable pinion bearing retainer.  Look for a round bolt-on piece at the front of the axle behind the U-joint.

This. Look at the pinion. If there is 6 bolts around the pinion. If it does it a 10.5. Chevy didn’t put a 11.5 in the 6.0 trucks. The 11.5 came in diesels and the 8.1 big block. The 6.0 came with the smaller 10.5. But good news for you, if you ever want to regear, gears are cheaper for 10.5. Lol what I’m getting ready to do with mine. Going to go with the G2 cover.

While not girdled the G2 cover was the best deal in terms of looks, ease of filling, extra capacity, etc.  Only thing is I read the bolts that come with it are too short.  Need M8x35 bolts for it.

What fluid are you all using?

I know that at least since 2011 (possibly earlier) that if you get a 3500HD with a 6.0 they come with the 11.5, which is similarly around the same time you could get a CCSB SRW 3500 with either diesel or gas well.
