2006 2500HD Duramax Starts then cuts out after exactly 2 seconds

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I drove home one night from work and parked the truck. A chevy Duramax 2500HD 6.5 L. The next day, it cut out after running for 2 seconds.

I had a bunch of off-duty mechanic types look at it. They plugged in the code reader. There was one code, for an open circuit glowplug on cylinder #5.

We keep starting it. It dies after exactly 2 seconds. Always.

Here is some information:

The passlock security tattletale comes on, but goes off or might stay on randomly after the engine quits. Not to jump to conclusions, but it may be a passlock issue. I have tried the 10 minute relearn procedure 4 times tonight. The security/passlock tattletale will either go off or stay solidly lit the whole time. It doesn't go out after 10 minutes like it's supposed to.

The code buddy live data shows the FRP hits about 50000 kpa when the engine quits. That should be lots of fuel pressure, right?

I've got the charger on the batteries. It reads a nice 14.5 volts for VPWR on the live data.

What else would cause the engine to cut out so consistently at time = 2 seconds? I need some ideas.

Thank you!

Will add more as I have to.

UPDATE:::

I have bought a tech2. I have confirmed by reading the engine control module that the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Fuel Disable is activating, thereby killing the engine.

The problem I have is that when I go to the Body Control Module and look at the security data, the passlock states, and other values are reading normally. I'm not sure the passlock is the problem.

However I get

U1000

U1301

Lost communication with xxxx

in most of the modules. For instance the instrument panel cluster, the heating system, body control module and so on. When communications are compromised individual modules use default values as a failsafe. So the truck might shut off.

I’m sure you meant 6.6 Lbz
IMO best DMAX

Fuel Starvation and/or Air in the Fuel Lines
The Duramax diesel is susceptible to fuel starvation and getting air in the fuel lines. This can be contributed to the fuel filter housing design and the fact that the Duramax does not use a lift pump. Rather, the high pressure fuel pump (injection pump) is responsible for vacuuming fuel from the tank. It is quite common for the fuel filter housing to develop a small crack or let air seep in due to a bad housing o-ring or water-in-fuel sensor o-ring. It can also be relatively difficult to prime the fuel system once air has been introduced into the system, such as when the fuel filter is changed. The 2001 to 2004 LB7 fuel filter housings seem to be the most prone to problems.

Glow Plug Failure/Concerns
Glow plug failure was a concern on the 2006 model year LBZ and LLY Duramax models, but the problem should have been long corrected for owners of these years. The concern was that the glow plug module would over cycle the glow plugs, creating a scenario in which the tip of the glow plug could actually deform and/or break off in the engine. In such an instance, catastrophic engine damage could (and likely would) occur. GM identified the problem and has reprogrammed the glow plug module to eliminate this risk.

Does it have an aftermarket remote start?

No. It has had a new key and cylinder installed 2 years ago though.

I'll get you guys the VIN later.

I need to read codes on the BCM body control module. What do I need to buy to do that? All I have is a codebuddy.
