Has a cord that is attached to an internal spring.

my guess it keeps the glove box from slamming when you open it up kind of like the tailgate

There's a spring inside as you mentioned so the box isn't just a bunch of dead weight that falls open and it also assists with closing. I noticed that a few weeks ago when I was taking apart the dash and thought it was pretty clever.

That didn't even cross my mind that it was for the glove box door lol thanks.
