USB from aftermarket radio to console

Recommended Posts

Waiting for my aftermarket radio to arrive and planning some things.

The wiring kits on Crutchfield say they don't support the USB port.  The head unit I am getting has a USB port on the back.  My preferred method would be to identify where the USB cable from the console arrives behind the dash, splice it and plug it in the back of the head unit.  Has anyone been able to identify which cable is the USB behind the stereo?

If not, I guess plan B is to run a long USB extension from the back of the radio to the console, and splice it there.  Ditto for the AUX, although with CarPlay, I don't really need the AUX.

The USB hubs connects to your HMI. A single USB cable for each hub lands on a port on your HMI. HMI is located behind your upper glove box. This is how USB Data/Logic for Car Play (if equipped) is ingested into your system. If your head unit has the ability to ingest car play into it, you’ll need to run a USB cable directly to the head unit. I don’t think you can leverage the factory USB hubs for this. There are PCBs inside the hub with chips that handle logic so I don’t think splicing in will work.

Trying to tie into the factory USB for an aftermarket radio is just to much of a head-ache! u will now have android auto or apple play(given that you new stereo supports it) you will no longer have car play.  in reality you have 2 ways to go

  • A: you can buy a mini usb B to usb adapter and intercept the usb plug at the HMI that comes from your center console . something like this AX-USB-MINIB.
  • B: The best way to do it especially with a new aftermarket stereo is to replace the USB AUX hub inside the console, with something like this: BATIGE Square Dual Ports USB 2.0 Male to Female AUX Flush Panel Mount Extension Cable for Car Truck Boat Motorcycle Dashboard - 6ft. you can even add an HDMI: HDMI Panel Flush Mount Cable - CGTime 1 Meter HDMI Extension Dash Flush Panel Mount Cable For Car, Boat and Motorcycle. This way you can mirror your phone onto your stereo if the stereo does not support HDMI u can use a ISHD01 from Isimple.

Yes is cost s little more to go with choice B but it works and there is no guess work.

  • Thanks 1

Found out the Pioneer Nex I'm getting doesn't support a USB hub, so option B it is.  I'll keep the existing USB hub in place for charging only and the new one for connecting the phone to the radio.

Thanks.

Can you confirm this Option A works?  I bought an Amazon mini-usb to female usb (with data wires) cable and tried to connect it to my 2018 Silverado but had no luck with power or data for Android Auto.  Does the GM harness use a standard usb pinout?  Thanks

Use this. It's a complete knockout

This would be cool if it worked in the front USB hub with the flip up door.

It's doable, I've done it before at my work. I use abs material to make a new plate. If my customer drops in one day, I'll take a pic

So is this made for the flip up arm rest location for the front bench seat?
