DISAPPOINTING 2019 Chevy Powertrain / Gearing options

Chevy trucks are some of the tallest geared trucks on the road, which is only made worse by putting larger tires/wheels on from the factory. Here is the gearing a Trailboss with 33” tires should have to maintain a base trucks 31” tire overall gearing to the road.

Base LT trucks with 5.3L come with 31” tire, 8 Speed, 3.23 gearing, moving to the Trailboss with 33” tires (or any GM 20” wheel package for that matter) you would need 3.42 gearing to be equivalent. 3.42 should be standard with any larger GM optioned tires/wheels. Moving to 3.42 gearing doesn’t compensate for added tire weight or 2” lift or for a desired increase in performance, so 3.73 should also be an option.

Base Silverado 255 70 R17  (31.1”)

Optional Trailboss or any 20” wheel package 275 60 R20  (33”)

Formula used:

I think the old tire diameter gets divided by the new tire diameter for this formula to be correct unless I'm missing something. When I did (31.1/33)3.42=3.22. If I follow the formula as written in the post (33/31.1)3.42=3.63 with both numbers being rounded to the nearest tenth. Math is far from my strongest subject so if I'm missing something feel free to point it out.

The formula is correct. If you have a 31" tire and 3.23 gearing and you step up to a larger 33" tire to keep the overall ratio to the road the same, you will need to lower the axel ratio to compensate for the larger tire. Old 31" with 3.23 = New 33" with 3.42. Hope this helps!

(33/31.1) x 3.23 =3.42

If I end up with a 5.3, I really want it to be a max tow truck.  Trailboss sits pretty dang high anyways with it's "33"" 18" tires (that Goodyear says are 32.1...).  I'd rather go RST with a 1" lift, black grill and some 0 offset 20x9s.  Use 275/60r20 Duratracs, P rated.   I'd miss the 4 low, but that otherwise sounds like a lot better package.

So the formula would be used to find the new gear needed to keep the overall ratio the same as factory, if I'm understanding correctly?

Funny they still don't have tow mirrors yet

Per GM website, 2018 models, I believe they only come with tow mirrors added only with the “Max Trailering Package” which gives you the 12500 with the 6.2.
Having the 6.2 gives you the best towing when combined with the “Max Trailering Package” giving you 12,500#’s towing completely outperforming 5.3’s with same “Max Trailering Package” which are rated at 11,000#’s

What I don’t get is why make the new trucks 350#’s lighter especially since GM took away 300#’s towing capability with the new 19 models. I thought the whole idea was to increase capabilities when introducing a newly designed truck not decrease capabilities especially one that’s been redesigned from the ground up!

I hugged my 18 today, have you?

Payload went up and so did towing for most models, especially 5.3s.  Good news is that even though the towing capacity went down on the 6.2 max trucks by 300lbs, payload is 2 or 300lbs higher - so you can actually load the truck up and tow near the limit if you'd like.

I have no doubt that the t1s with their stronger boxed frame, revised suspension and longer wheelbase will make a better tow vehicle than the K2.  That said, the k2s are great trucks and it's not worth upgrading until you have some years and miles on it.  For someone with neither, the K2 would have to be a lot cheaper to consider it.

I don’t know anyone that weighs their payload before loading it lol. The point was that everyone else is going up in every direction but GM has already publicly said that they’re not looking to compete on towing which really I understand but still doesn’t look good that 300#’s was lost on towing.

Is it just the models with the plastic/carbon fiber beds that lost the 350#’s on their bed weight? Because if so then the lower end models “if” offered with Max Tow should tow same as the K2’s but I’m assuming GM only puts Max Tow on their higher end models with their plastic/carbon fiber beds. Are you stuck with the plastic/carbon fiber bed getting the Max Tow Package?

As far as the new redesigned frame etc, time will tell. I’m hoping GM kicks butt. At this moment, there’s absolutely nothing that interests me about the new truck. Most importantly, I’m hoping the new 19 truck owners are satisfied because all eyes on them for functionality/reliability/ergonomics etc. God Bless the United States of America [emoji631] and all the US automobile manufacturers!
