DISAPPOINTING 2019 Chevy Powertrain / Gearing options

Recommended Posts

All this whining about rear gearing, it's the final drive ratio that moves the load and one has 8 speeds to choose from.

6L80/90s 5th Gear with a 3.42 gear yields a 2.91:1 final drive ratio.  With a 3.73 it is 3.18:1.  The Allison 1000 in 5th with a 3.73 is 2.65:1.

The 8-speed in 7th with a 3.23 is 2.75:1 and with a 3.42 gear it is 2.91:1.  6th gear is a 1:1 ratio.

Yep finial drive. Chevy has some of the highest final drive on the road. Its all been discussed earlier in this thread. 8 is better than 6 but not as good as 10. Ford offers 10 speed across lineup with more gear ratios to go with it.   ...kinda dissappointing

I don't think so at all.  There are plenty of final drive choices via gear selection whether one has 6, 8 or 10 speeds.

My point is that other manufactures do. They offer 3.73 and 3.92 gears from the factory, the same gears you're proposing to pay a few grand for. Oh but you'll have some online warranty, no GM warranty and a smile.  You're in the .1 % that thinks that is better.

SO WHAT if other manufacturers do.. GM has chosen not to and you and only an handful of others have made a stink about it.. It's not a big deal to the 99.9% rest of those who will purchase these trucks.

They offer them in the 2500hd, for the cost of gearing maybe look at 3/4 ton. Might not be cheaper but you can get the two speed transfer case and full floating rear end and hd transmission.

I believe the "so what" was already answered, multiple times.  I won't go over it again as it's clear you're not capable or willing to understand.

It's very narrow-minded you believe what you want is what 99.9% of people want.  That's a very unfortunate and incorrect assessment.

I guarantee that GM will lose sales for these pointless and silly decisions.  Want painted bumpers and a 6.2? 60k High Country.

Personally I'd rather the manufacturer offers what I want if I'm spending this kind of dough.  You however, may be less picky.

Who would have thought a GM truck discussion forum wasn't the place to discuss things you're disappointed with on GM Trucks.  Would you rather it was just a big circle jerk with every post saying things are perfect as is?  I'd suggest that forum be called "fanboys with blinders" - or something to that effect.

I believe the gearing in general will probably be adequate for the masses but the lack of choice isn't good especially considering how confusing they've made the driveline availbilities across the lineup.

The fact that you can order a basic F150 XL regular cab with a 5.0 or 3.5 with a 10-speed and a 3.73 locker will likely hurt GM in the long run if they don't try to compete. Trying to create exclusivity by simply limiting the driveline availability will chase some buyers away.

I'm not saying they're going to tank with this rollout but I don't know that the 2.7 is the magic bullet because otherwise there's nothing really exciting about this truck based on the information they've given. Ford has their usual near limitless options and Ram has gone high end interior with a great performing 5.7 8-speed and a 3.92 avaiable on pretty much everything. At the initial launch there was some literature from GM stating how well they've integrated the 10-speed. The only problem is the masses won't get to experience it.

To be fair,  I'd like to see how they perform on the 13th when the embargo is lifted. Some dealers have already taken delivery. I'm waiting to see how the HD turns out and if they compete with Ford's 7.0.

Lack of gearing choice isn't the only ball they dropped on this new gen though it is deeper than the previous gen. What irritates me is the power train is limited by trim still. Want the 6.2? Pay for the LTZ/SLT or higher. Can't afford it? To bad.

Ford as their direct competitor allows you to get any engine save for the diesel in a single cab work truck and 10 speed. You can pick the engine and the rear end gear you want to go with it. It is insane that GM and Ford co-developed the 10 speed together and yet GM won't allow it to be used in higher volume. No power bumps for the motors is also disappointing as their main competition are marketing engines with more power and better gearing.

I would also guess that a majority of us on the forum have to work for a living or are living on a budget of some kind and would have appreciated a mpg boost to stay competitive, especially since the trucks have allegedly lost up to 450 pounds. In the end, all I see is that GM is trying to get customers to pay more to get what they want/need. As a customer, I want to see more flexibility. GM is still producing 8 speeds to recoup R&D cost on it which I get but why continue to offer the 6 speed? Make the 2.7/4.3/5.3 come standard with the 8 speed with the option to upgrade to the 10 speed below a certain trim and make the 10 speed standard above that.

Allows us to pick the powertrain combo we want in the trim level we can afford or want. I'm a truck guy and generally prefer the GM powertrain but they're not the only ones who know how to build a good truck. Some of the folks on here might disagree with me and that's fine, we are all entitled to our opinions but to me it seems that GM isn't even trying to be the segment leader. Perhaps they are laying all their bets on their 3.0 diesel, only time will tell.

I agree with this 100%....There are multiple manufacturers that will allow you to add almost any option you want on any model.

Want different gears - Check the box

Want a different fuel tank size - Check the box
Want a better sound system - Check the box

Want a different engine - Check the box

Want a different tranny - Check the box

Want to delete a feature for a specific option - Check the box and watch the price go DOWN!

With GM if you want the ventilated seats you need to buy a High Country premium. It doesnt matter if I want zero other features in the high country package..you have to buy the high country to get the ventilated seats. (at least from the ordering manual I've seen).

....and If they dont get you with model upgrades they get you with the option packages within a model range. They pick one option the majority wants and then slap it in an expensive "safety, convenience, technology" package. When I started looking for my wifes last vehicle (Tahoe) there were four or five options she "had" to have.... By the time I finished adding the packages that included these four or five options the car was loaded with 20k of options we didnt want and or need.

I realize GM cant build custom vehicles for every single customer. The price would balloon and the line would slow to a crawl. The reality is that there are some bolt on features that are simple to add and wouldnt turn every single veicle into a customer vehicle on the line...Their option/pricing methodology is a money grab, nothing else

Im stuck in a position that it is impossible to buy the truck I want, they dont make it and wont build it.  The only other option is to spend 15-20k more in model and package upgrades. The idea I cant build a Trailboss LT with ventilated seats and a 6.2 seems crazy when all of the parts are sitting in a bin and are available.. This in turn means I have to look at a Denali or a High Country and add on GMs lift kit to get the truck I want..This forces me right in the middle of the luxury truck market and subsequently I will have to compare it with the Ram limited. I can get everything I want with Ram discounts for about 58 vs 69k. Tough call......

It seems nuts to me from a customer satisfaction and loss of sale perspective..

It's a cost saver in most cases, but they definitely use the premium power train, the 6.2 and 10-speed, as leverage to get guys to spend more money. It's the same thing Ford is doing with the high-output version of the 3.5 Ecoboost. You can only get it in the $60k+ Raptor or the $60k+ F-150 Platinum.

Limiting customization is a major cost saver for a high volume production line. It's expensive to offer infinite customization, which is why even Ford's CEO is planning to cut the number of configurations by more than half in order to save money (he needs to cut over $10 billion in costs out of Ford's truck and SUV lineup over the next few years). GM, Ford, and Ram all bundle the most popular features in the most expensive packages. For example, 12" touchscreen that Ram has been showing off is listed as a $1000 option, but it requires you to add the advanced safety package, so the total price you end up paying to get the 12" touchscreen is $7,285. You also have to chose at least a Laramie trim to have the option of choosing the 12" screen.

Amen man.  People will tell you they build it the way people want it and it saves money to package stuff, well they sure as hell aren't passing the savings on so why do I care if it's easier for them.  Ram sells fewer trucks with more customization...how can they afford to do it but GM can't?  It's not can't, it's won't.  Ford let's you customize the crap out of it.  Seems only GM pulls this crap to this level.  It would be excusable if they were cheaper, but they're not.

I still love the truck...but I need a LTZ and then pay 2 grand to buy new bumpers and have them painted?  Can't afford a HC, can't get a RST or LT TB with a 6.2.

They care only about forcing you into a more expensive truck.

I also want to see what GM is going to do to compete against Fords STX package XL trim. In my area you can get a new F150 Crew cab XL STX package that is optioned out better than my 14 LT Z71 for about 31k before TTL. I'm talking your choice of engine save the HO Eco or diesel, 10 speed, 8" screen, back up camera and sensors, max tow, 20" wheels, vents for the back seat in the center console, etc. It's not hard to see why Ford is the segment leader and GM better wake up before Fiat takes second place. The day Fiat takes second is the day that GM executives need to be fire for allowing the likes of Fiat for beating them, at least Ford is a respectable truck....

GM are you even trying? Or better yet listening like you claim to do?

I always wonder who they're talking to when they say they've listened to customers. I have a hard time believing the majority said to carry over drivelines, don't increase power,  continue to limit driveline options based on model, don't offer the new premier 10-speed on work or mid-level volume trucks even though you told us what an awesome job you did integrating it, make the fuel tank smaller with no option for a larger one and please increase the price, thank you.

I understand needing to market some options for the upper trends to attract customers to spend more but forcing a customer to settle on a powertrain combo they didn't want primarily is the perfect way to have unsatisfied customers. The day I bought my '14 I knew I had settled for the engine and every day since I had wished I had the 6.2. My next new truck will probably be a Ford though due to how I can get it configure with the options I want and powertrain I want without having to be forced to purchase the extras that inflate the price tag to something I can't afford or barely afford. GM executives have dollar signs for eyes and if they continue to operate this way, they will need another bailout before long.
