DISAPPOINTING 2019 Chevy Powertrain / Gearing options

Recommended Posts

I’ve been a GM truck guy forever and keep hoping they will get their act together next Gen. The trucks keep getting better but they always seem to put out a truck that’s a little behind the competition. There should be a performance turbo available this Gen.

My other observation is that lagging doesn’t result in a more reliable truck. There are always issues and running changes to components and software.  I’ve been through hell with my 2014 and my 2016 Denali isn’t much better. It’s all about profit, IMO. I’ve avoided jumping between brands like some because to a certain extent the competition has issues too.  We are stuck with Mediocrity and bean counters but we still get to enjoy escalating prices!

Yea, your right. I don’t know how anyone can stand driving a 420 HP, 13 second truck. Kinda makes me wish for that 160 HP SS 454 truck of the 90s. Some people aren’t ever satisfied.

It's like you didn't even read the thread.  Just want to the last post and quoted it with your 2 cents.

I'm happy for the 1% that get the LTZ /HC 6.2.  Meanwhile 90% of the buyers buying the competitions truck can get the powertrain they want.

“So what?” Its disappointing that’s what. Hard to get excited about good enough on a new truck. Most used trucks satisfy good enough to get the job done, and for a fraction of the price. “they will still sell just fine” …arrogance

Then go to another brand if GM doesn't have what you want, or go stick your own gears in there.  GM has decided what is going to be released.  There is nothing you can do to change their minds about it.  Bitching about it doesn't do any good either.

You don’t read the comparison between the 5.3 and the rest of the trucks in places like car and driver. The GM little V8 stays with the others (big) V8. Whereas the 6.2 has no competition. The Hemi. Is the slowest.

You mean 10% get the 6.2, 90% get the rest. Most wish they had the 6.2. In all my auto buying years, GM has always had critics as do ALL the other manufacturers and yet it is what it is and they’re still being sold. I’ve always loved the GM Trucks, never stopped buying them, something about them just works very well and that’s the reason why I keep buying them. Their new power trains may seem disappointing to lots only because expected even higher amounts of power but as always just watch how fast they’ll be picked up and loved. God Bless, be safe and please stay off the left lane, that’s for us 10%’s [emoji6]

I’m right there with you. I will always get the biggest engine and the 6.2 in my truck. Always have always will. That’s just me. I will always buy GM no matter what. Yes I thought the engines were gonna get a power bump but not a big deal. Nothing can touch the 6.2 anyways. My HC 6.2 screams and it’s a 2wd which you don’t see much out there. Now the 19’s I will have to get the 4wd since that is the only way you can get the 6.2. Kinda disappointed in that but it is what it is. But with the 10 spd and lighter weight it will be a fun truck to drive

I’d wait a few years, guaranteed the one you want will be out in a few. Keeping my bad boy but I’m waiting for 2022 diesels [emoji6][emoji631]

The fact that they're offering lifted trucks with piss poor gearing is what I find ridiculous.  My truck came stock with 3.42 and a 5.3 I tossed a lift and 33s on and it was a turd and eventually killed my trans.  I lowered to 4.10 and built my trans to push 35s and a lift.  GM has no idea what they're doing when it comes to offroad trucks and its sad.

The truck I wish GM would make is to drop the LT4 in a crew cab 2wd truck. It won’t happen though. One can dream. If the RST had the 6.2 I would be getting that one. So I guess it’s the HC for me.

That was a 4-speed though right? The 8L90 has much more aggressive gear reduction compared to the 4L60 or even the 6L80. By doing that, it makes the axle ratio much less important.

The 8-speed+ 3.23's has a better final drive in every gear compared to a 4L60 + 4.55's.

Except for 7th and 8th. If the trans has 8 gears it isn't going to try and stay in 1-6.. I understand all of the advantages and the gripes. If I wind up with a 10 speed I will still regear the truck because it will not handle the highway or towing with a heavier aftermarket wheel and tire setup. No doubt it will do better than previous years but it still won't perform where 99% of these trucks get used daily. Should GM have to account for us 1%; absolutely not but it isn't for us. Just hope the aftermarket catches up sooner than later.

Edit: I currently have a duramax and with 35's it could have used 4:10's; when those wore out I put 33's on it instead of the gearing headache again. Maybe the Allison needs 8 gears not sure.

My 18 6.2, 323, 8 speed works flawlessly (knock on wood) and with new heavier aftermarket Fuel 20X9’s wrapped with 33’s KO2’s, 2.25 front level, 1” added rear and I get 22-23 mpgs on road trips. 85f691e2b83c2b43e5e4e6ad9f1973c4.png
