1992-1993 454 SS

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what the 92 and 93 454SS's had for ratings? Is it 255hp for both of them? I know that the 90 model had 235hp, and in 1991 it was raised to 255. But they also say that the 255hp mark was set in 1992, so who's to say what's right.

Apparently, 454ss.com is still looking for info on this, however, they've been saying that for the better part of 7 years  so not much help there.

If anyone knows give me a holla back, yo!

The horsepower number was always 255hp, 405tq for the 454 SS ('90-'93).

The confusion is probably that the regular TBI 454 in the 3/4 ton and 1 tons was rated at 235hp and 365tq(?)  I forget the torque number now, but its around there.

Really? Hmmm..............

I re-read the engine info on the 454 for 90, and they tell me that the 454SS's use the EFI, and not the TBI. The TBI is used in the 2500 and 3500 models for those years. They also state hp/tq numbers of 230hp and 385tq for the 90 model.

In 1991, the numbers were upped to 255hp and 405tq. No info seen for the 92 and 93 models, other than a re-statement of the numbers for the 92 model (which are the exact same as the 91). The 454 used in these trucks was known as the Mark V.

In ANY event, it still is a bad ass mofo of a truck, and I would be proud to have one, regardless of year.

Your right! I never knew the 90' model was only rated at 230hp. The '91-'93 were rated at 255hp/405tq. For '90, they must have just used the 3/4-ton and 1-ton Tonawanda 454... and your right its 230hp/385tq.

The '91 and newer motors reguardless still used a throttle body injection system. The Tonawanda 454 used TBI injection as well, they must have just upgraded it in '91.

I'd love to find a black '93 454ss with grey interior in awesome shape. With a whipplecharger and headers, those 454ss's are rockets.

Here's a cool article on a '91 454ss and a '91 syclone. Cool article

Just food for thought. On my 94 when you pop the hood it is obviously a TBI, but, the original window sticker says 5.0L EFI.

:smash: Cool article!

Chevy also turned out a few C1500 Sport models with the Special Order 454 instead of the 350 in 1992.

You sure that wasn't listed as a "Standard" engine then in the optional area it lists either the 454SS RPO or the RPO for the 454?

I remember the Car & Driver article when they had a shootout between the 454SS and the Lightning. The Lightning was a tad quicker, but their comment was, "The Stump pulling contest is next and we know who'll win that one!" or something along those lines.

I'd like to pick one up as another toy myself, but the problem I find is either they are dirt cheap because they have been ragged on and are worth nothing more than scrap or they are in mint condition and exact a premium.

No it wouldnt be that. They list the actual engine at the very top. My window sticker says 5.0L EFI but then in the standard options box it lists the 4.3L Vortec and the again under Opitions it lists the 5.0L.

My cousin had one back in 92 and his friend bought a new 454SS. The sport would outrun the 454. But I know with some engine mods the 454 can be a beast.
