How to tell which transmission you have?

Recommended Posts

I've read about some of the problems as well, but have not had any hiccups with my 2016 5.3/8 speed LTZ. I'm sitting at 43,xxx miles and the transmission has been flawless. That being said, I also have the piece of mind knowing the drivetrain in my truck has a lifetime warranty offered by my dealer.

Heck yeah. Man don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing the transmission yet.. I love the 8 speed, I prefer it over the 6 speed

Another easy way to tell, is the control unit is under the hood and mounted to the firewall just above the brake booster. I had to flush my trans. at approx. 26000 miles because I was getting the rumble thru drivetrain on freeway. I used mercedes fluid that is for fuel efficient trans. It had been about 3000 miles with no issues. Truck was also already tuned at 21000 miles by Pat G. Tuned makes truck night and day better.

Welcome to the site.

That is an odd question, did you buy the truck new or used, and was it not listed either on the 4 square (Maroney sticker) or on the information provided by the dealership for a used truck?

If I am buying a late model truck, I like to know what I have just purchased.

Thanks guys.. as of right now the only thing I am experiencing is when the vehicle is cold you put it in drive and it seems like when you first start there’s a slight hesitation and a clunk, but goes away after driving and does not exist when it’s warm... I could live with it, but I might see if there’s a software update for the trans before warranty expires

Dude you need to get that fixed asap. My 8L90e had the delayed reverse engagement when cold, there is a stator shaft that was a bad design, they have redesigned it since. My whole trans had to be swapped out, would have cost me $5,000cad out of pocket. Your trans will get worse and will fail, it will start to cause random intermittent torque converter vibrations eventually too. It is all explained on page 1! It took you longer to become a member and register and then post your stupid question than it did to just simply read the 6th post in the thread...Good Grief!

A Monroney Label is a window sticker on a new car... a 4 square is a type/design of worksheet used to serve numbers

All 6.2 trucks from 2015 on got the A8, in 2016 all 6.2 trucks and any 5.3 truck with the LTZ/SLT package got the A8.

^^This^^

Btw, had a 2015 6.2L with 8sp, no problems in 75,000 + miles

had a 2017 6.2L with 8sp, no problems in 40,000 miles.

Trans worked perfectly.

R & R the ATF in both trucks before 10,000 with AMSOIL as I have done to every vehicle since 1979.  Not any trans problems yet. Been changed in my 2021 10 sp for 3.5 yrs / 40,000 miles

Best way to tell which transmission you have is just put it in manual mode and go through the up and down buttons on the column shifter.
