Oil life %

Recommended Posts

My oil life info monitor jumps to 0% even after a full oil & filter change and a reset to 100%. I do track the mileage but is there a sensor responsible for the error message that I can change ?

I don't have an answer for your question, but I did want to ask a similar question. I was wondering how the oil life is monitored. Is it straight mileage, or does the computer have an algorithm for how you are driving (highway vs city.... Towing... Ect)

Then I was going to ask about the fuel filter life also.... I have an '05 Duramax and my fuel filter only comes up saying "change fuel filter".... What type of mileage should I get out of a fuel filter? Because I am still showing about 25% oil life and the fuel filter probably doesn't have 1000 more miles on it..... I was thinking that it (fuel filter) should last at least twice as long as an oil filter....

Short story is algorithm. The explanation of the algorithm has been posted many, many times on here. You might search a bit. Would say on your Duramax fuel filter is based on sensor. Your fuel filter life is based on the quality of the  fuel you purchase for one thing.

All of our rigs and heavy equipment are sensor based to alert operator, but we have a maintenance  program that works pretty well tracking all of our equipment, allowing filters to be changed  on a schedule, also covers other maintenance items.

Others will chime in to help ya too

The OLM is supposed to use an algorithm.  Not sure if it still does since on our 2011 Acadia when ever the OLM got down to 0% I was at 5k miles.  Every time up until we sold it with 80k miles on it.  Now our 2016 Suburban is at 7,500 miles when the OLM gets down to 0%  every time since we purchased it new and we are at 37k miles on it now.  My 2014 Cruze diesel is the same  OLM at 0% = 7,500 miles every time and I'm at 69k on it.  It is my understanding that my diesel Cruze's fuel filter monitor, which shows a % tracks gallons used.

It is my understanding that the Lamda platform vehicles with the 3.6 where having issues with the OLM going as far as 12k miles and it was causing sludge in the engine and timing chain wear. So GM backed it down to 5k.  I know that our 2011 Acadia's used oil analysis showed that the oil was shot at 5k and I couldn't extend the drain interval past that.

Now on the Suburban, my UOA showed great results and I was able to take it out to 15k miles.

Maybe other can keep watch on their OLM and see what mileage is at when it gets down to 0%.  I reset my trip 2 odometer when I change the oil to keep track of the mileage from that point forward at each change.
