Now I get it!  I thought you were talking about the plastic sill piece but you're referring to the metal part of the door sill!  This thread makes more sense now!

yes. Referring to the white part in first post. If all goes to plan a 4" wide piece of 3M, Xpel, etc will cover from the  weatherstripping down to just above the textured paint. Just going to cover the 24 - 28" of flat part, not where it curves up near the fender or pillar. AKA the step in and out traffic area.

I use an Erosion Tape that we use on our aircraft to protect the nav light lenses. It works good and molds around the corners nicely and is easily removed if I need to replace it plus it comes in various widths. It is also quite thick which helps against gravel etc. It is made by 3M and you can get it from most aviation shops like Aircraft Spruce and Aviall. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/protectiveLeading.php

I did the same with the 3m erosion tape we use at My FBO. I also used 2" on the Leading Edge of my hood and the leading edge on both front fenders. Those ereas catch a lot of debris and can chip easily. Not any more. At $200 plus a roll its well worth the investment since a paint job is way more.
