2018 silverado 1500 2wd g80 swap

Wow, I'd like to get overpaid like that! $1900 for labour! For a competent, experienced individual, a differential swap is a job that can be done in one morning; maybe 5 hours tops. It's even easier just to swap an entire axle out; maybe 1-2 hours tops. Especially easy on a new truck as there's no rust to deal with.

Don't get me started on the price they quoted on the differential..........

Go with the Detroit. When my g80 eventually goes I’ll be replacing it with a Detroit.

Figure out for sure which rear end and gear you have. Read though this thread if you need help getting that info. 

 

 

Call these guys and ask the them what locker to go with for what you want to do with the truck and any future upgrades your planning to do. Also what other parts/pieces are needed to complete the job and if you can use your current rear gear ratio, etc. This is the important part.

THEY ARE SOME OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY AT WHAT THEY DO. THEY BUILD REARENDS FOR SOME OF THE BEST OF THE BEST. On their page you can also use the DIFF WIZZARD feature once you know your rear end specs.

 

Ask about warranty on the locker. I get you don’t want to lose your powertrain warranty. But if you keep the same rear gear ratio how is anyone at any dealership ever going to know you swapped in a locker if you take it in for anything that doesn’t require them to pull the rear diff cover off? And if something goes wrong with the rear diff your going to take it back to the shop that installed it anyway. Odds are a good locker might have a longer warranty than you truck anyway.

 

Ask QP if they can recommend any shops in your area. This is a long shot. If not call and ask everybody you know who owners a race car, a drag car, or built 4x. Also ask local mechanics and or the guys at a machine shop who is the go to guy for rear ends. You want the guy in your area that has done hundreds/thousands of rear ends not some newbie tech who watched a guy do one once. Setting up a rear end isn’t rocket science but close enough isn’t good enough as that will end in premature wear & tear/failure.

 

Your going to end up with a better locker for less money this way. Adding a G80 to a one month old truck at this point is asinine from a money perspective.

I was just confused because i thought all chevy trucks these days come with automatic locker or at least a LSD. I wanted the g80 becasue it was a standard factory option and didnt think they were gonna gap me so high for it. I am scared honestly to put in an aftermarket because I am not informed enough on the topic.

So i called quick performance and they told me the g80 is my only option for my rear axle assembly without changing it out completely bc i have a 12 bolt 9.5". g80 costs about $640-$900 bearings and cosumables would run me another $100 and they would charge about $250 for labor , so im looking at about $1000 for aftermarket shop to do it or get gapped almost $1500 by the dealership and retain my warranty.

Time to trade your truck in on a 2wd or 4wd with the g80!  I can't believe truetrac, detroit, etc does not offer anything for these trucks yet, the new design has been out for 5 years now!  I ran a detroit locker in my 1992 model and it did the job.

Something seems fishy to me.  If GM had come out with a new rear axle that is a 9.5" 12 bolt for the light duty 1/2 ton 5 years ago, it would have been big news and we would all know about it by now.  A 9.5" rear axle would be significant strength upgrade from the old 10 bolt.  Hell, the old 12 bolt that is all but indestructible from the 60's muscle cars was only 8.875".  I hate to go against a professional drivetrain shop, but something just seems odd here.

Yea im not to sure he said that its 12 bolt 9.5" 3.42 gear ration rear end and thats from a 17 and from what i can tel the 17 and 18 r identical.

Well, I stand corrected!  I did a little playing on Rockauto and they do list a 9.5" 12 bolt cover gasket and 33 spline axle shafts for a 9.5" 12 bolt axle.  I can't believe this upgrade has not been discussed at length on this forum.  If it has, I missed it.  That should represent a significant strength upgrade over the old 30 spline 10 bolt.

Well I think Eaton or someone should make a damn torsen style helix gear LSD then so i can get one!
