Pre 2007 Silverado Transfer Case Fluid Change

Recommended Posts

2003 Chevy Silverado 4.3 manual transfer case

The owners manual calls for "Dextron-III" ATF fluid for the Transfer Case. I read that Dextron-III has been rebranded/replaced by PN 88861800 (manual transmissions and transfer case fluid). I can't find this anywhere locally, so my question is can I use "Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid"? It says that it is Dextron-III compatable.

Thanks for any advise.

There's still a pump, but otherwise you're correct. Good ATF (dex 3 or 6) will work fine. Both can be found at any parts store.

Do NOT use Dexron 6 in the old manual cases or push button non-auto cases.  It is not compatible (seals, etc.).  Dexron III or GM Manual Transmission And Transfer Case Fluid only.  The GM stuff can be had at any GM dealer or ACDelco parts store.  If you want a Dexron III ATF, most Dex/Merc labeled bottles meet the Dexron III requirement.

The content of this bulletin does not apply to manual transmissions or transfer cases. Any vehicle that previously required DEXRON®-III for a manual transmission or transfer case should now use P/N 88861800. This fluid is labeled Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid. Some manual transmissions and transfer cases require a different fluid. Appropriate references should be checked when servicing any of these components.
