2017 Sierra Denali rear window EXPLODED!!!

Just happened to my truck this morning.  GM services entered my info and said they cannot do anything to help unless there is a bulletin on the problem.  They told me I am at the mercy of the Dealer, dealer fees, and the dealers service manager.  Very disappointing.  I've told everyone I know that owns a newer Silverado to NOT use the rear defrost!!

That is shitty.

Please report the issue:  https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

All of us have been reporting it.  Hopefully this will give it the exposure it deserves.

I've not read all 200+ replies on here but is this only happening on vehicles with the sliding rear window?

No, however, I only recall reading one instance of a solid back glass breaking out; all others were with a sliding window...

Once the magic smoke is out, the window explodes :sigh:

I have 2 years left of warranty, but im going to disconnect my rear defroster.

I have it turned off rear defroster in settings but it still comes on at a certain temperature.

Exactly what happened to my 2015 2500 HD Silverado but a little worst. First, smoke then sparks followed by window explosion. The sparks started a fire burning the backrest of my child sit. I was able to put it out. The back rest of the child sit shielded my 5 year old little girl from getting burned. I think GM is just waiting for something worst to happen before acting on it or maybe we should band together, file a lawsuit to save others from getting hurt

That case appears to be different from the rest in that the heated rear window wasn't involved. He just opened the door and when he closed it, it shattered. Common situation was low temp.

Living in Florida, it never gets that cold. Hopefully, I will be OK.

Good evening! Sadly this is my first post on this forum but I have lurked a bit. I own a 2017 Sierra Denali which I bought in May of 2017. I was driving today and after using my remote start to start the truck (like i do often) I drove 5 minutes and then smelled smoke. I turned around and saw smoke pouring out from behind the rear seat on the driver side. I began to freak out and pulled over to get out but about 10 seconds after I saw the smoke and began to pull over I heard a loud bang like a gunshot. I turned around and my rear driver window shattered into thousands of pieces. It stayed in place but shot a decent amount of glass inside and outside of the vehicle. I am dropping the truck off at the dealership in the morning to have this diagnosed and this is clearly something that should not of happened. I only think what would of happened if I had kids or people in the back of the truck when this took place. Very disappointed right now and want this taken care of, but figured I needed to post this on here to inform all of you about this issue. I have researched this happening and it is a common thing on some Ford f150s but I havent seen to much about

Yet again a sad story hallowed by the customer handling it wrong. Please I beg you call the gm service rep first get a approved service ticket. Then and only then move forward.
But anyways I know know you are enjoying you free Denali and the free money...Oh wait no... ok good luck...

Happened to my 2015 2500 HD Silverado. Parked on my driveway with my 2 children inside. I hit the auto start to warm it up then my 2 kids were screaming there is a fire. I rushed in to see the interior of my silverado engulfed with smoke, I saw sparks on the rear passenger side windshield then it exploded. The sparks caused fire burning spots on the back rest of my child sit and luckily, I was able to put it out. The back rest of the child sit shielded my 5 years old little girl from getting burned. I went to my dealersip & you guessed right! It is out of warranty and has nothing to do with them anymore. I hope nobody will get hurt in the future. Once fixed, I will go straight to trading it.

PLEASE REPORT THIS TO:  https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

All of us with the same issue have reported it.  Before trading it in, contact General Motors directly.  This is not a one-off issue and several of us are experiencing it.  I contacted GMC through their chat feature and they are currently investigating it.  I also directed them to this forum.  You should do the same.  I have a son who sits in the back so I want to do whatever I can to make sure that children aren't injured because of this safety hazard.

I understand people's frustration and disappointment in GMs action on this matter. However please do NOT post in here. You are destroying you ability to take actions. It is best to state issue and ask for input then take your own actions. To resolve with gm,dealer, shop, insurance, or lawyers. But I absolutely promise you posting here doesn't help you at all. Any good lawyer would tell you the same, also in class action the lawyer gets all the info and names on member. This forum will never be held as evidence in any substantial claim case.
I say this to help you guys out. It's one of those things that you play nice and work with the other party to get a reasonable resolution to your liking, or you go in with "evidence" of others and claims and demands and see how fast they refuse service push paperwork and get the declined service. Then your done.
I wish all the best of luck.

Sure, it would be nice if GM fixed my issue but that's not my primary concern.  I have a son that sits in the backseat.  If GM fixes the issue, then that would be awesome.  However, it sounds like your recommendation would be to negotiate with GM on an individual basis.  I understand that approach, but what about all of the other parents that don't even know about this yet and are still placing their children in rear (and forward) facing child seats?  Again, my concern is for the children out there; not just to save a thousand bucks.  I am not interested in threatening with lawsuits or placing demands on GM.  I am interested in communicating the issues with everyone involved.

As you can see, this thread has been going on for some time yet there is no public resolution.  What is your recommendation so that all owners (not just the ones with damages) are able to resolve this safety issue?

Luckily my son wasnt in the car when it happened. Gmc should have done something about it by now.  They do not care. I dont see how posting facts would destroy chances of taking action? This forum might not be used for evidence but its good to see how many people this happened to. I hope they do make a lawsuit for not warning anyone.  They have known for a while now and done nothing.

I understand some people's positions and respect there option on how they wish to deal with it. I can assure you something has very much been done about it. The consumer just hasn't been notified or serviced on it yet. But GM is very aware of the issue. At this point the issues isn't large enough to issue a full recall. If and it may be "forced" to adress the issue gm will wait till last minute in Hope's to reduce the costs. Much like the airbag recall that never even made it into most vehicles.
I'm simply saying if you wish to have it covered and addressed without out of pocket expenses. Best to handle it with service rep and then at the end post the results as "evidence".
Maybe someone with knowledge will leak the cause of the issue a the proposed fix. However I know most all will not do it as they view it as a GM issue. [emoji849]
